Alpyland Mottarone

Alpyland is located at the peak of Mottarone and consists of a 1.200 meters long rail track, which boasts a 360 ° view of Alps, the surrounding lands and seven lakes. Similar to a roller coaster, the run develops with curves, bumps, changes of slope and a height difference of 100 meters. The two-seat bobsleighs are equipped with a manual braking system which the passenger can use to adjust the speed to his liking and a selective braking system that slows down all bobs at the end of the descent. Open both in summer and winter, Alpyland is fun for everyone, at any age!

Palazzo Borromeo

In 1670 Count Vitaliano Borromeo decided to turn a rock awash in the middle of the lake into a “place of delights”. It took four centuries to complete this magnificent work that includes Palazzo Borromeo and its scenic gardens. The tour of the house is fascinating: the Throne and Queens rooms, the Napoleon's Room, the Gallery of General Berthier displaying a collection of 130 paintings. On a lower floor, six grottoes covered with pebbles, tufa rock, stucco and marble were designed to afford cool relief from summer heat. World famous, its baroque garden, with the Teatro Massimo at the centre, consists of ten terraces in the shape of a truncated pyramid. Visitors marvel at the sight of the monumental unicorn, the obelisks, the statues, the two towers and other architectural elements, as well as the mighty trees, like the camphor and citrus trees, and the collections of roses, rhododendrons and camellias.

We went at the end of august in the late afternoon. The boat trip is less than 10 minutes and already from the water, you can enjoy the beauty of the Isola Bella ( The Beautiful Island). The entry is €17 per person and you have to go through the Palazzo first before getting into the Garden. Isola Bella’s palazzo is like a baroque chest of wonders floating on the water. You will walk through beautifully furnished halls that afford incredible views of the lake and witness many renowned artists’ exclusive paintings, precious furniture, marbles, neo-classical stuccos, shining armors and Flemish tapestries made of silk and gold. The Italian garden with a baroque taste spreads on parterres and terraces placed at different heights and sprinkled with statues, obelisks, ageless stone stairs and balustrades. This results in an impressive view, displaying the power and magnificence of the noble house. Take your time and enjoy being sound rounded by the incredible beauty of Isola bella

We visited the summit at Mottarone en route from Stresa to Orta . The views during the drive up were fabulous but these were surpassed easily by those from the top. 360 degree views of all the lakes and other mountains .There were also a decent selection of cafes and restaurants available Well worth a visit even outside the winter ski season . If your brave enough there’s also the Alpyland Toboggan ride - a rollercoaster hanging off the side of the mountain !

Park Pallavicino

Villa Pallavicino was a private residence in 1855, when it was purchased by Ruggero Bonghi, statesman and writer. In 1862 the ownership was transferred to the noble Genoese Pallavicino family who enlarged the estate, transforming it into a nineteenth-century neoclassical style villa. In 1956 the Pallavicino family decided to transform their marvellous garden into a wildlife museum open to the public. In July 2017, the Pallavicino Park became part of the Borromeo tourist circuit. The trees are the greatest feature of this park: centuries old chestnut trees and liriodendrons, among the oldest in Italy, red beeches, maples, larches, the majestic ginko biloba, tall sequoias and fragrant magnolias. A real attraction is the imposing cedar of Lebanon, in the natural amphitheatre outside the villa.

Beautiful gardens just a short walk (15 minutes approximately) from Stresa centre, with a little (outside eating ) cafe when you reach, probably half way. COVID friendly and safe. Temperature taken on entry. Social distancing throughout the gardens is observed, masks too where appropriate! There are also transport cars, accommodating anyone who can’t, or doesn’t want to, walk quite high up! Coming down is no problem! The farm and free roaming animals are great to see as well. Beautiful views over the Lake too.

Cableway Stresa Mottarone

Reviewed By G7957KZryans - Cardiff, United Kingdom

Stresa is by far the best town to visit if you want to see the glory of lake maggiore, especially if you are visiting from milan, take the train to stresa or drive and the views of lake maggiore are spectacular. But the best way to see lake maggiore is by the cable. The cable takes 20 minutes to get to the top. With a half way stop in alpino to change cars, or you can visit the alpino botanic gardens. Then to the very top take the chairlift that is not as scary as it looks. The views from the top of Mottarone are spectacular. You can see the alps, 5 other lakes and the many towns of lake maggiore and the borromeo islands. The views are very epic from the cable car itself. It can get scary in some parts especially when going up, but the view is very worth it. The cable car is also very reliable has it was the first electric one in Italy.
