The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry is one of America’s hidden treasures—a superb collection of over 2,500 puppets from all over the world; an archive of books, manuscripts, posters, drawings, audio-visual materials and photographs all covering the history of puppetry. It is also the new home of the Puppeteers of America’s Audio-Visual Collection: the largest collection of videotapes, films, and other media about puppetry in the United States. The Ballard Institute curates and produces exhibitions of puppetry, both at the Ballard Museum and for touring across the United States. The Institute also offers workshops, museum tours, artists’ forums, film showings, performances, and other events and programs that promote the art of puppetry as a twenty-first-century art form with deep historic and global roots.

I visited on a day I took off from work to attend a concert at UConn in the evening. It was a beautiful fall day, the campus was gorgeous, the ice cream great, and the Museum was another treat. Very interesting permanent collection and exhibits were great, both provocative and beautiful.

We were delighted to attend the Vienna Piano Trio, a Yelp Elite event at Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts, Uconn, Storrs. The three selections: Haydn, Ravel, and Mendelssohn were all very entertaining and well received by the audience, including us. the Chamber Music, headed by Viennese-born, Stefan Mendl, piano, along with Clemens Hagan, violincello, and David McCarrol, violin, was in sync in every way, and demonstrated an exception level of energy through the concert. The trio has won numerous international awards, and it is easy to see why. They bring an empathic resonance to the works they perform and allow the audience to take in the music without applause until each work is finalized. We highly recommend this music experience when you have opportunity to hear them. Next time, we hope to hear some Schubert or Brahms.
