Mount Kazbek

Reviewed By Mina G - Tehran Province, Iran

Kazbek is the second highest mountain of Georgia. I joined this climb with national mountaineering team of Iran in May, it was winter condition and stormy.
I do not suggest normal trekkers to go in spring, the best season is June to September.
In spring the Glacial slots are hidden yet which makes it very dangerous to trek on glaciers.
There are several guest houses in Stepantsminda (Kazbegi district) we stayed in a very normal cheap house and prepared the food ourselves. We did not went with a local guide but in case of bad weather it is not really easy to find the path because the mountain has huge landscape.
If you love to climb 5-thousand peaks I suggest you to try Volcanic Mount Damavand,5610 in Iran.

Trusso Valley

To be honest, I did not think the Trusso valley was that beautiful (especially when you had just been to Svaneti). We rented mountainbikes departing from Stepantsminda, but it was not very safe to cycle on the main road and too hot on the path to Katriseri.

It's a rough and not-so-smooth path, but with some extra caution, you will reach the beautiful large waterfall.

Gergeti Glacier

Reviewed By Smallfishbigworld - Gran Canaria, Spain

Not all the Glaciers are the same and not all looks the same. We visited this one in May and it was still covered of fresh snow. From the Gergeti church to the Glacier is around 6 hours with snow (and backpacks), all the way up, no flat, now down. There is a refuge (hut) where you can stay the night with your sleeping bag (book in advance by telephone) or you can go up light and went down the same day, if you are fast enough. The glacier must be at 3800-4300.

Stepantsminda History Museum

Reviewed By pinoytraveller2 - Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

After vising the Gergeti Trinity Church I went straight to the Stepantsminda Historic Museum which is housed in a two storey building. There is a small entrance fee which is collected at the door. The museum has a rich collection of ancient artifacts, photos, and maps. It is sad to see that not much has been done to improve the building which needs a total renovation. I hope this will be addressed by the local government if it wants to preserve the history of Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi).

St. Elias the Prophet Church

Reviewed By Simin S

We visited the St. Elias Prophets Church by riding horses from our hotel to the Church.
The experience was absolutely surreal. The snow covered Mountains and the beautiful horses made us feel fairy tale like.
The trek is very safe and the horses are friendly and tamed. The pictures do not do justice.
The trip costs GeL50 per hour.

Mountain Freaks

Mountain Freaks Mountain Travel & Adventure Agency was established on the pillars of friendship, love for the Mountains, and dreams of creating a unique mountain tourism agency. This type of agency did not previously exist in Georgia, but we believe that the impossible does not exist. We started with the assumption that “life is not measured by the amount of breaths, but the number of moments that take your breath away”, which is also the motto of our agency. We found people who think like we do and created a fantastic team with the goal of preparing travelers for the highest level expeditions. We do not have customers; we have guests who become our friends. We do not do mass tourism, but we offer and promise you the journey of your life. We do not want you just to stand on top of Mt. Kazbek – we want you to feel the real atmosphere of an alpine expedition and the brotherhood of the rope. During tours with us, we do not want you just to “check off” places from a list of “top 10 attractions in Georgia” – we want you to drool over Georgia because we all consider it to be the most beautiful place on Earth. We promise that during our expeditions your breath will be taken away repeatedly and you will feel that you are really alive. Mountain Freaks Mountain Travel & Adventure Agency is a professional mountain and travel agency, as well as an officially operating company registered in the Register of Entrepreneurs in Georgia under the number 441485028. The owners and leaders of the agency are Ewa Stachura, Jaba Gomiashvili and Nika Gomiashvili. We have all of the required permissions to run a company, coupled with European certificates for mountain guiding. We also provide invoices and bills for all services, and we insure expedition members. We have professionally guided people to Mt. Kazbek for over 10 years. During that time, we have successfully guided more than a thousand tourists from all over the world to the summit. We’ve worked as lifeguards on Mt. Kazbek and at the ski resort in Gudauri for many years. We support all projects that promote safe and conscious mountaineering, and we are also sponsors of many high mountain expeditions in Georgia. We are the owners of cars and buses, mountain equipment and horses (for horse riding as well as for the transport of luggage to Meteo Station on Mt. Kazbek). We all live in Stepantsminda / Kazbegi and we have own sleeping bases in the town, as well as in Gudauri. We are fluent speakers of English, Russian, German, Polish, and Georgian. Our agency guarantees the lowest prices for all proposed expeditions and services, because we organize everything by ourselves, without any agents. You can count on our professionalism, experience, responsibility and organization for every detail. We want your trip to Georgia to be the journey of a lifetime.

Had such an excellent experience with Mountain Freaks that I can't help thinking they'll be the envy of most of the taxi drivers overcharging tourists to visit sights that Mountain Freaks charge 25 Lari to visit (a bargain!). Inside they offer equipment hire, maps and even have a range of gear to buy and, what's more, the staff are incredibly helpful. They were offering two day trips when I visited: one to Truso Valley (could not recommend visiting more) and one to Juta and, as the Juta trip was full up, I went for Truso. They make exploring the Kazbegi region super easy and they'll have a market monopoly if they carry on offering the services they do at the prices they do. Truly unmatched.
