Second only to Berlin in size and population, the city of Hamburg is home to one of the biggest harbors in Europe. A stroll along its many waterways and canals illustrates why it has been called the "Venice of the North." Don't miss a trip to the local fish market (Fischmarkt), the Merchants District (marked by its imposing red-brick architecture), a fine dining experience along the river or a night out in the university quarter. And did we mention the Reeperbahn (red light district)? It's quite famous for its… red lights.

The hamburgmuseum (or hm), also known as Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte ("Museum for Hamburg History"), is a history museum located in the city of Hamburg in northern Germany. The museum was established at its current location in 1922, although its parent organization was started in 1839. The museum was named hamburgmuseum in 2006. It is located near the Planten un Blomen park in the center of Hamburg. The museum has many artifacts from preserved by the Society of Hamburg History founded in 1839. The Petri portal from Hamburg's St. Petri Church, built in 1604, was built into the museum courtyard.
This is a fantastic museum and provided us a very welcome and thorough introduction to Hamburg not long off the plane. I love museums that have life-size set ups of old pubs, shops, and other rooms to immerse you in the experience and this museum has so many. Well worth the entry fee and you could spend a good few hours here.

The Tropengewächshaus: location, opening times The Tropengewächshaus (tropical greenhouse) is situated within the park 'Planten un Blomen' near Dammtor railway and S-Bahn station.
We had a wonderful walk in the botanical gardens on a trip out of busy Hamburg. The place is incredibly peaceful with a host of wonderfully arranged and carefully planned sections representing plants from around the world. We visited on a beautifully sunny day and enjoyed just sitting with a coffee and soaking up the atmosphere. We especially enjoyed seeing the beds full of poisonous and medicinal plants. The gardens are well worth a visit if you happen to be in Hamburg and are very easy to get to via public transport. This was one of the highlights of our holiday.

Very touristic and plenty of activity offers, including river and canal cruises and local tours. Also very picturesque, a perfectly balanced mix of historical buildings, modern architecture, and natural beauty.

The summertime Hamburger Dom is a carnival with rides, games, typical German food and fireworks.
We had a great few hours in the evening here whilst visiting Hamburg. Plenty of fairground rides for all ages. There are German market stalls on the ground selling food, drink, souvenirs and gifts. Prices reasonable (free entry, pay per ride) Lots of fun and something a bit different to do in the evening, highly recommended!

The botanic garden Park Planten un Blomen (plants and flowers) has fountains, a playground, and a rink for ice skating or blading.
Even if you try really hard, chances are you will not do this place justice. It is so beautiful! The minute you set foot in it you are transported to a world of beauty. It is really big and green, even in October! It is so well looked after...There are rivers, cascades, benches to sit and just take it all in, astonishing trees, breathtaking flowers, the Japanese garden is fantastic. If you only have time to do one thing in Hamburg, this should be at the top of your list.

Took the compact 1-hour tour and was shown around the stadium as well as hearing stories about this club. Really worth the visit for football fans as FC St. Pauli is a special club with strong social values and you'll see an unique stadium that you'd rarely see elsewhere!
