Christopher Columbus added St. Barthelemy, or St. Barts to his collection in 1493, but the French soon stepped in. Today, the chic Caribbean island - officially a department of France - is a popular winter getaway for people from mainland France, the rest of Europe and North America. Keep in shape and walk between attractions or get a rental car to see more of the island. Beachgoers can choose between strands such as Grand Saline, if nude sunbathing appeals, or shady, isolated Colombier Beach.

We always pick ATVs when they are on the menu and we were so glad we went on an island tour with Frank and Agnes. We geared up with a lesson, some helmets and some road rules and off we road thru the streets of Gustavia, passed the airport, through villages and up hills. The ATVs were well kept and easy to operate. We had 3 stops and saw some beautiful views. We stood by the runway of the tiny, famous airport and watched 2 planes land after they flew over our heads. Agnes, Frank and their little white dog Igloo were full of history and shared stories about themselves. A truly lovely couple who give you a little glimpse into life on this boujee little island.
