Garajonay National Park

A misty rain forest full of mystery and romance: great for hiking.

The whole National Park is a treat to visit and explore. Well worth a visit but you would be missing out just visiting the once! The varied flora and fauna is lush and beautiful with well marked trails fit for all abilities, with long distance trails crisscrossing.

Caldera de Taburiente

A stunning site to behold from different points. Definitely worth visiting by La Cumbrecita visitors' centre, very easy to reach by bus or tax or car, from which taxis are also available though some walk the steep climb to the initial viewpoint or drive to the Parking Point. An easy walk from there takes you into the caldera and even this arthritic old lady with bronchial asthma found it very comfortable gently down for the first kilometre and gently up back again.

Parque Nacional Ordesa Y Monte Perdido

We took bus from Torla to the park. They go every 20-30 min and cost around 4 Euro. Once you reach the park, you can have hot drink and a snack in the only restaurant. It was quite cool in the morning (in the beginning of Sept, 8 am, 13 degrees), but by the end of the trip it became hot under the sun. We climbed up to the main viewpoint (Mirador de Calcilarruego - the view was amazing), then went along the canyon to the waterfall (Cola de Caballo), after that went through the valley back to the bus. The waterfall and river were quite dry but still beautiful. Whole trip took us 9 hrs. The easier option (and the only option if it is raining) is to avoid climbing and just walk through the valley to waterfall and back.

Montana de Montserrat

Reviewed By maureen5 - Franklin, United States

Visited for the day from Begur (on the eastern coast of Spain). It was about a 90 minute drive via the freeways. It is a very beautiful and historic site - well worth the visit- the Basilica was my favorite - along with the spectacular views from up top. It surprised me that hardly anyone talked driving their own car up the mountain - there are two fairly good sized lots near the top and you don't have to take the train. This is a good way to see it also if you have mobility issues. The museum and church can be visited by climbing no more than 2 flights of stairs - and both were very interesting - with the added touch of hearing the wonderful boys' choir at 1 pm in the church. The museum was top notch - many styles - with religious works representing perhaps 1/3 of the art there. The cafeteria supplied hot and cold lunches (cafeteria style) - and even though there were many visitors, finding a table was easy (we visited on Mon.Nov. 25th, 2019).
