We are producers of Zapotec figures carved in wood called "tonas" and "nahuales" known worldwide as alebrijes. We use Mixtec-Zapotec iconography on our pieces in a unique style that we have been able to develop over the years. This is born from a deep appreciation of our origins. Our goal is to make known our Zapotec culture based on the high quality figures we create.
We took the public bus to Tilcajete's road junction where we transfered a moto-taxi to the workshop. The pottery is beautiful and seeing how it is made was very interesting. We walked back through the interesting country town and then had lunch at a nice restaurant on the main highway.

Bazarte is an enterprise dedicated to the rescue of the textile art from the Chiapas Heights region. Therefore, we foster the selling of handmade textile captured in original articles as handbags, wallets, men, women and children clothes, as well as footwear and accesories. All of our products are hand crafted by our local artisans, they only use the highest quality materials, after Bazarte approves them. That is why every product is completely unique, you will not find a repeated design. We invite you to visit us in our 3 different locations at Downtown San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas: General Utrilla 18, 20 de Noviembre 7, Real de Guadalupe 11.

Love this shop. Every time I'm in Oaxaca I have to go there. The first time I bought a beauitful fiber art necklace that I wear constantly. Also an amazing bag that i use daily back home in San Francisco (because too much shopping). Theses are one of a kind pieces. Last time I bought a ton of gifts for my lucky friends... an a piece or two for my growing collection. Love Vianney and her work!

Lenateros have everything when it comes to paper - fabricating paper from plant fiber, recycling paper, making prints, books, notebooks, diaries, you name it. I took a workshop of making recycled paper, and spent 4 interesting hours knowing the whole process of how paper is made, old school way (more or less). Knowledgable and friendly staff as well, worth a visit and spending some dollars which goes into right hands.
