This is a GREAT military museum! Upon arrival, one of the gentlemen gave us a personal tour of the exhibits. Many, many interesting things. You will be here a while. You will definitely not regret visiting. No admission charge. I gave a generous donation on the way out and I suggest that all visitors do the same to help sustain this gem.

Island Dog Brewing

Look for the waiving street sign and travel to the right and around to the back of the buildings to enjoy some great beer. We enjoyed a flight of 4 beers at Island Dog this weekend. Unique varieties ensure something everyone will enjoy. The owners operate the brewery themselves and have done a great job. There are games to keep the kids busy if you want to drop in with the family giving the place a fun and friendly vibe. We bought a 4-pack to bring home, including the Beer Called Blue for me! And the artwork on the cans is beautiful! And you can order from Otto's Pizza right there for delivery to the premises.

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse

Reviewed By directorfantasies - Tampa, United States

This active working lighthouse is located in South Portland on the Southern Maine Community College campus at the end of a granite breakwater that juts out into Portland Harbor and Casco Bay. Visitors can walk the 900 foot breakwater right up to the lighthouse, but walking does require careful steps as the blocks are irregular in shape and there are gaps between them. The day we were there it was windy so my husband wouldn't let me walk out. The lighthouse is open on certain days for tours, mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays plus some Saturdays and Sundays between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend (see their website). Tours are led by volunteers of the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust give visitors the history of the lighthouse. We have also approached this lighthouse from the water on a lighthouse tour that leaves the Old Port across the harbor. We also had the experience of staying at the Spring Point Inn with the view of the lighthouse from our room. (See my review on that for more info.) Also take time to explore the ruins of Fort Preble which overlook the lighthouse.

This site is buried in behind the community college with almost no directional signage. Even worse, there does not appear to be any parking other than for the college.
