This is a GREAT military museum! Upon arrival, one of the gentlemen gave us a personal tour of the exhibits. Many, many interesting things. You will be here a while. You will definitely not regret visiting. No admission charge. I gave a generous donation on the way out and I suggest that all visitors do the same to help sustain this gem.

(Late Post) Quick stop at Cushing's Point Museum @ Bug Light Park! Be sure to say hi to Donna & Anne from Tamy, the travel surgeon. I had an awesome time chatting with Anne & Donna! Two of the nicest people in Maine! Open 10a-4p. Cushing's Point Museum @ Bug Light Park/South Portland Historical Society. South Portland, Maine. 10/3/19. Drive a little further down to check out the Bug Light Park/Lighthouse and Liberty Ship Memorial. Big green lawn for our 4-legged friends welcome too! (P.S. Thank you for referring me to Becky’s Diner! What a wonderful experience there with great food & tradition! Rachel, waitress was outstanding! This diner was featured in the show: Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives!) #visitportland #portlandmaine #visitmaine #history #portlandhistory #mainehistory #americanhistory #cushingspoint #buglightpark #southportlandhistoricalsociety #nicepeople #historicalsociety #beckysdiner #famousdiner #dinerwherethelocalsgo #dinersdriveinsanddives #travelsurgeon #lifeofatravelsurgeon #locumprovider

Look for the waiving street sign and travel to the right and around to the back of the buildings to enjoy some great beer. We enjoyed a flight of 4 beers at Island Dog this weekend. Unique varieties ensure something everyone will enjoy. The owners operate the brewery themselves and have done a great job. There are games to keep the kids busy if you want to drop in with the family giving the place a fun and friendly vibe. We bought a 4-pack to bring home, including the Beer Called Blue for me! And the artwork on the cans is beautiful! And you can order from Otto's Pizza right there for delivery to the premises.

This active working lighthouse is located in South Portland on the Southern Maine Community College campus at the end of a granite breakwater that juts out into Portland Harbor and Casco Bay. Visitors can walk the 900 foot breakwater right up to the lighthouse, but walking does require careful steps as the blocks are irregular in shape and there are gaps between them. The day we were there it was windy so my husband wouldn't let me walk out. The lighthouse is open on certain days for tours, mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays plus some Saturdays and Sundays between Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend (see their website). Tours are led by volunteers of the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust give visitors the history of the lighthouse. We have also approached this lighthouse from the water on a lighthouse tour that leaves the Old Port across the harbor. We also had the experience of staying at the Spring Point Inn with the view of the lighthouse from our room. (See my review on that for more info.) Also take time to explore the ruins of Fort Preble which overlook the lighthouse.

This site is buried in behind the community college with almost no directional signage. Even worse, there does not appear to be any parking other than for the college.

This is the best family beach in the Greater Portland area. It has facilities, snack bar & life guards. It has substantial free parking in a lot and adjoining streets.

Unusual lighthouse designed after Greek monuments.
A balmy windy day made this lighthouse a fantastic visit! Beautiful fall visit with beautiful ocean waves and blue sky!

The memorial is a nice bit of local history and very well made. Plenty of boards to read about the hows and whys this area was so important to the war effort. Free to all and plenty of parking as its inside Bug Light Park.
