Lived in area or 20 years and just discovered this area thanks to Covid restrictions and only being able to explore 5km from home! What a gem of a place? Fantastic wetland/ marsh land area with clearly defined walking tracks, or bike riding tracks. There are sign posts scattered throughout indicating different tracks. I entered via Winton Vale Rd- but very close to Hawkestow Station on the Mernda line from the city. As a local, am very used to seeing kangaroos but yes, there are lots of roos here....also echidnas, wombats and a large variety of birds. Watch out for snakes- wear good shoes. Peaceful and full of bird noises as you amble along. Walking tracks were mostly flat and easy to manage, occasional muddy parts or little streams of water to cross. This area links into the Hawkestowe picnic area and the landscape is quite diverse within a small area. Lots of bluestone rocks and open grasslands too. I'll be visiting again and again... Great place for a picnic too.

Car Park from Gordon’s road. Walking access from lakes boulevard and Wilton vale rd. Some big Roos in there. Keep distance and no problems.

Great walking tracks- if you park at the bottom carpark and walk to the left you can walk along the river to Mernda and beyond. Well defined walking tracks- a few steeper parts but not too bad. The river is lovely and lots of trees and birdlife along the way. A walk from the bottom carpark to Farm Vigano where you can grab a coffee/snack is a nice walk that fits within exercise restrictions at the moment in Victoria. It's a really lovely, peaceful walk. Wish I'd discovered it years ago.

Due to a fire in December 2019, a section of Plenty Gorge Park south of Memorial Drive remains closed due to fire impact. Plenty Gorge Park offers a wide range of natural and cultural experiences only 20 km from Melbourne, where the spectacular gorge sets a backdrop for stunning landscape views and the abundant native wildlife are always on show. Walk the tracks to the beautiful gorge and marvel at the diverse wildlife living within the park. Shaped by volcanic activity, the Plenty River is a dividing line between two distinct geological types. The basalt on the west and sedimentary rock on the eastern side generate a wonderful diversity of habitats, making the park an important refuge for both threatened and regionally significant species. Enjoy a picnic or barbecue in the park with a range of recreation and picnic areas to suit everyone.
