What to do and see in South City Centre, Province of Leinster: The Best Gift & Specialty Shops

October 27, 2021 Elouise Mccaul

You've probably heard that Guinness tastes better in Dublin (fresh from the factory), but what you may not know is that Dublin is a perfect destination for the whole family. No, we're not suggesting you let the kiddies drink a pint. Instead, take them to the Dublin Zoo, to feed the ducks in Stephen's Green or on a picnic in Phoenix Park. Scholars enjoy walking in the literary footsteps of such writers as Yeats and Joyce, while discerning shoppers have their pick of designer boutiques.

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (TBG+S) is a gallery and artists' studios complex located in the heart of Dublin and the Temple Bar cultural quarter. It is one of the first DIY artist initiatives in Ireland started by a group of artists and administrators in 1983. In the 1980's, TBG+S was instrumental in establishing Temple Bar's reputation as a place for cultural activities in Dublin and led to its regeneration as Dublin's Cultural Quarter in the early 1990's. At Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (TBG+S), we place the artist at the heart of everything we do. TBG+S works to support professional visual artists and to connect as many people as possible, with the engaging dynamic of art. We do this by providing affordable studio space to over 40 artists annually and through our vibrant programme of exhibitions and events. The building is home to 30 artists' studios that provide artists with a warm and spacious working environment and allows them to be located within a creative community in the city. The gallery features art work by the most compelling Irish and International artists in five exhibitions annually. At TBG+S, all of our programmes are free and accessible to everyone with a curiosity about visual art. The Talks + Events series includes studio and gallery tours, lectures, critical discussions and film screenings for audiences. Our Education programme works with young people, families and schools in Dublin city. TBG+S is funded through annual funding from the Arts Council of Ireland. Dublin City Council is also a funder of TBG+S and the main corporate sponsor is Mason Hayes & Curran.

Brought my daughter on one of my twice yearly visits. She was a kid then, now she goes back a lot herself. Always find staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable from the original old gentleman himself to his son/daughter who now run the shop. Could spend hours in there but time does not allow. My favourite bookshop anywhere, always look forward to my trips there.Have picked up signed first editions in my area of interest. Highly recommended.

Bought some clothes, blouses and slacks with good quality and excellent fit. Bought a Claddagh ring here a third the price in a jewelry store. Much nicer too. They set me up with a Horizon card for on the spot refund of VAT. Could have used that earlier. Sales staff were knowledgeable and efficient. Big food area on second floor featuring Irish music. Great store. Worth a side trip.

Yesterday I wore the magenta wool hat I bought on my visit to Dublin and I was reminded of this fantastic store. It was a place that drew my husband and I in to visit. So many wonderful tweed articles and the great wool hats. But best of all was the charming man who ran the store. I would go back any time. I would love to own one of the tweed jackets. Maybe on our next visit.
