Super-interesting exhibits on Kirkenes's ordeal during WW2. One of the world's few Shturmovik Soviet ground attack planes in perfect condition. Also exhibits on the local mining industry and a wonderful photo exhibit by a local woman in the early 20th Century. Worth at least two hours here.

This is simple one of the nicest places we have ever been. The scenery, the silence, the wildlife, the adventure were all fantastic and we will definitely be back one day. Just amazing.

Treriksroysa (or Three-Country Cairn) is the point at which the borders of Sweden, Norway and Finland meet. It is an example of a geographical feature known as a tripoint. The tripoint monument itself is a yellow dome-shaped stone made of concrete, located about 10 metres (33 ft) out in Lake Goldajarvi (also known as lake Koltajauri). It is located at 489 metres (1,604 ft) above sea level. The monument was built in 1926. The size is about 14 square metres (150 sq ft) with diameter of about 4 metres (13 ft). It is mentioned as the world's smallest island divided by a border, even if that is a matter of definition. It is reached by walking 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from Kilpisjarvi in Finland on a public road. In summertime, it can be reached by boat from Kilpisjarvi plus a 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) walk.

We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the Bomb Shelter. The guide was most informative and we learned about the history and importance of Kirkenes, how the town came about and as well about the impact of the radiation fall out as a result of Chernobyl. Worth a visit.

An important reminder of the Soviet liberation of the area, all too often overlooked by historians in the west. Wreaths are still put there to honor those who took part in this important part of the history of Kirkenes.

This church is owned and operated by The Church of Norway, the largest religious community in the country. It is an Evangelical-Lutheran church, and approx. 69% of the Norwegian population belong to it. There are eight cemeteries and six church buildings in Sør-Varanger parish. The first church building was consecrated in 1862 it was the district’s main church until it was destroyed by fire in 1944 after being bombed by Soviet planes. (Kirkenes was an important German port under the Second World War.) Only the spire remained. This was removed from the ruins and today can be seen standing in the left corner of the present church, together with a picture of the old building. The new church, was finished in 1959. The architect was Sofus Haugen. The church is open during services, and we try to keep it open from Tuesday to Friday if our staff does not have other activities in the district churches. Information about upcoming services can be found on the information board or website.
