Somerville Theatre

Reviewed By Cherry_Wonderdog

What helped make last night’s Julia Jacklin concert so successful was the venue, itself, Somerville Theater. There’s a lot of history here, with the old architecture and wood carvings, grand dome above the stage, and attractive ceiling designs. It’s a nice and cozy spot to hear an intimate concert. Yes, I saw Dixie Dregs here several years ago and wouldn’t exactly call that music intimate, but it was a lot better than at a monstrous impersonal amphitheater like the Wang. Seating in the orchestra was surprisingly comfortable and appropriate for all heights. Unlike Cary Hall in Lexington where the orchestra section is completely flat, Somerville Theater has an incremental slope so that those in front of you are a few inches shorter than normal. Sure, it’s not stadium seating, but my view was not obstructed by any means, and I’m no Wilt Chamberlain. Last time I saw the aforementioned progressive rock ensemble, seating up in the balcony afforded an attractive top-down view of all the musicians that may be even better if there are height concerns. The other aspect about Somerville Theater that I liked was its amenities. A variety of draft beers and related drinks were available for a reasonable $8, and there were comfortable wrap-around sofas on the upper level where groups could congregate during intermission. In addition, the box office sold tickets directly to those who wanted to avoid Ticketmaster fees, and an impressive collection of better seats became available to the general public about an hour before showtime. I hope to return to Somerville Theater soon. It’s a great place that caters to lesser known musical artists who can perform at a price far more commensurate with limited economic means of the captive college student clientele in the neighborhood. Yet those in the audience made for a concert experience unlike the concert scene downtown. There was a sense of warmth, vivaciousness, and inquisitive youth that welcomed the artists, yearned to understand them more intimately, and appreciated their talents without snobbism. I walked away refreshed and awaken to the possibilities of a new musical hotspot.
