This sensational monument by Croatian sculptor Anton Augusincic called "Victory" has a particularly evocative style, showing large figures reaching for freedom, plus friezes along the side illustrating the battles during which more than 1200 Soviets lost their lives during WWII (they were allies at the time). The spectacular location overlooking the Danube is on a river bend where, from Croatia, you can also see Hungary and Serbia. Well worth an extra hour of your time if you are driving in the area. Very moving.

For years, denizens of Central and Eastern Europe raised columns, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Holy Trinity or to mark a special event. This one, erected in 1729 to mark the end of the plague, is particularly striking.
The cross was erected in the honor of all fallen defenders for Croatian freedom in October 1998, at the estuary of river Vuka. The monument is 9.5 meters high and weighs 40 tons. It consists of two parts, and it is made of two types of stone: white Brac stone (the cross) and Pazin stone (the stand).
