What to do and see in Singapore, Singapore: The Best Health/Fitness Clubs & Gyms

August 29, 2021 Augustus Redeker

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

Damai Spa

In light of the current COVID-19 situation in the region, we have implemented recommended precautionary operational measures to ensure a safe environment for all. These measures have been validated by an independent audit led by a government-appointed agency, and Grand Hyatt Singapore has been awarded the SG Clean Quality Mark by the Singapore Government. Spanning over 78,000 sq ft, Damai at Grand Hyatt Singapore, is a haven for the body, mind and soul. Damai which means ‘peace’ features authentic local spa treatments reflecting the main cultures of Singapore – Chinese, Malay and Indian -and their traditional healing philosophies. There are 11 spa treatment rooms including a couple's suite with unique water features.

I have been going to this spa since it opened many years ago, and it never disappoints. Even before you get to the Damai, you pass by the Grand Hyatt's iconic and attitude adjusting beautiful waterfall which instantly puts you in a good mood. After checking in, walking down the futuristic hallway definitely puts your senses 'in the zone'. Mesmerizing is the only description I can think of. The massage rooms are well appointed with very comfortable and modern massage beds that are automatically controlled by the masseuse for maximum comfort and relaxation. Its a very peaceful and tranquil environment perfect for a relaxing massage. Damai has a great ability to select the best massage therapists. Over the years I rarely got the same therapist a second time, despite going 10+ times per year for so many years... but despite the rotation of therapists, i have never had a bad one and in fact all of them have been excellent. My therapist this visit was Norani who I highly recommend. From the moment you walk into the room, she has a very pleasant demeanor and makes you feel welcome. As soon as I lay down on the massage bed and started to describe my pains she said "I can see your lower lumbar is very tight", and she knew exactly where to work on my aching shoulders, lower back and 'bad golfers' hip. When I left there I felt light and limber - she was really great. I would say 99% positive rating on Damai spa. Only two improvement recommendations would be the lighting and price. At $290 for 90 minutes its pretty pricey, I love all outlets at the Grand Hyatt so I pay it, but if I were a stranger, I am not sure I would pay that. If you live in Singapore I definitely recommend buying the package of 10 which brings the price down but its still over $200, and you have a limit to use your sessions. Second: its the brightest spa I have ever been to. The natural sunlight comes through the windows so you never get the tranquil darkness that some people really like about massage therapy. Other than that- Damai still gets an A+ rating!

I have completed 200hrs YTT with Raj and Mien and graduated in Oct 2019. The YTT comprises the practice of Asana, Pranayama, Anatomy, Chanting, Meditation, Yama&Niyama, Yoga philosophy. We need to complete a daily journal, 10 yoga observation classes, 10 teachings, and exams. Raj is very knowledgeable in Asana and Anatomy. Raj is a strict yoga instructor. He respects the principle and originality of yoga. The development of yoga has been greatly influenced by dance moves and other factors, and Raj explained it to us how the posture has changed and what is the most primitive way of practicing yoga. Mien is specializing in Yoga Philosophy and Theory. It's really interesting to understand Yoga from another perspective, where we are not only practicing physically but it is also to understanding and improving our mental and spiritual self. I truly appreciate every lessons and time spent in Yoga Mala. Namaste.
