The Yading Natural Reserve is exquisite and humbling and out-of-this-world beautiful - and the most exhausting thing I have ever done! ! ! Remember, it's 15,000 feet above sea level - I took high altitude pills and carried oxygen (in a blue pillow, obtained in Yading, from the Hospital), and I still was totally exhausted - and exhilarated by what I saw ! The mountain peaks, the glacial lakes, the waterfalls, the prayer flags, the thousand other people who were either crying or gasping for breath, or taking selfies, made it an unforgettable experience! Everyone on the path was going through the same thing, so people were supportive, concerned, friendly, and EAGER to have their picture taken with waiguoren "foreigners"! Prepare yourself for this visit - it can be a killer - but, by golly, it is AWESOME !!!

Most tour groups make one stop at Jiaju village—at the viewing platform, just to take photos with the whole valley. But you’d be missing out if you came all the way to western Sichuan without spending a night in a Tibetan homestay in Jiaju. Stay for at least one night with a Tibetan family, have them cook you dinner and breakfast, and be sure to take a clean room on the top floor. Wake up early to stand on the roof of your homestay and to enjoy one of the most beautiful views you’ll ever see. Talk to your host family and learn about the Gyarong Tibetans of western Sichuan. Five stars for the overnight experience.

The entrance ticket is 200 rmb/per person. A shuttle bus will take on the top of the mountain next to the lake. We took hats and scarves in October in case of the cold weather, but we needed sunglasses and caps because the sunshine was pretty strong (and the wind was cool). Leave some power to get off the bus on some stations on your back way because you will find the great scenery there as well. It's one of the most beautiful place I have ever visited in my life!

This destination should be on every backpackers destination list. Stay in Tagong at Kampa Coffee or Himalayak Guesthouse. Both are Tibetan local style, sell Western breakfast & food, offer affordable beds or rooms with shared bathrooms, and have a great atmosphere. Organize a 1-, 2-, or 3- day horse trip or hike the grasslands. The landscape is absolutely stunning, with 360 degrees views as far as dozens of kilometers. As long as you avoid the few tourist hotspots, you will not meet any or many other people, even during the Chinese vacations.
