The monastic complex of Marmashen is located on a shelf with apple orchards overlooking the left bank of the Akhurian River, 15 km north of Gyumri in Shirak province. The monastic complex is composed of four churches of various dimensions , one of which – a circular church has recently been discovered with a jamatun and a chapel which are nearly in ruins.

The main point of the city. It's a large square, with a two churches on either side and the town hall on the third side. The focal point is the main statue of several warriors and St Vardan. We drove and were able to park in one of the side streets just off the square. There were shops and cash machines (ATMs) nearby too.

The inside of the church was still under renovation back in September 2019, but looking at the outside was great. On the side of the church away from the square is a photo showing the damage which happened during the earthquake back in 1988.

Some of the reviews below aren't for the correct statue - this is the Mother Armenia in Gyumri and is conveniently located just outside of the city, close to the Black Fortress. Check out the photos to see the difference. This is probably one of the smaller motherland statues, but it's still worth a visit. She sits with her back to the Turkish border - you can see the hills of Turkey from the monument - and looks down over the city. She doesn't have a weapon which is quite odd for one of these statues. When we were there, there was a group of people weeding the steps up to the statue to keep everything looking nice.
