Adventure World

Reviewed By HaljoHal - San Francisco, California, USA

This attraction costing approximately 4000 yen per day is worth the price of admission. The Penguin exhibition is the largest I have ever seen and the safari includes getting up close to giraffes hippos, lions, tigers and bears and if you want to pay extra you can even drive your own safari vehicle.
The water show with seals and otters was funny and entertaining and then there's the rides too. Most fascinating is their panda exhibition which if you haven't seen pandas up close, they are fun to watch. And finally, congrats on your new baby panda born just a few weeks ago.
We spent 4 hours @ Adventure World in the rain (most walking paths are covered for rain or sun protection) and even at the entertainment fee of approximately $10US an hour, per person, it was worth it.

Shirahama Beach

Reviewed By DYA717 - Honolulu

Shirahama beach is a sister beach of Waikiki beach of Honolulu Hawaii. A beautiful white sand beach. It has a nice Promenade in some sort of green stone from the right of the beach near a shrine to the left near the Tsukumoto Ashiyu. It is right in “town” so there are a lot of activities around that area. Senjojiki sandstones and Sandambeki cliff are easy walks from the beach area.

It really needs luck to visit this place. I visited there for 2 days and the first day was blocked by cloud and second day was better, but still blocked by cloud. Even the sun is not really in the middle of the hole, but the view is fantastic.

Senjojiki

I know this is a listed Cultural Asset of Japan, but it is also just an interesting rock formation, and it an be found in several spots along the coast near Shirahama.
The formations are pretty cool, tough to be honest if it weren't for the sign drawing my attention to them, I'd likely have walked right on by.
Not a bad thing to see if you happen to be walking the beach path, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see them.

Sandambeki Rock Cliff

Reviewed By DYA717 - Honolulu

Very beautiful high oceanside cliffs. A 1300-yen elevator ride takes you down ocean level into a system of caves and tunnel where you can see/hear in rushing waves. Samurai naval warrios used that as a hiding place back in the samurai warring era. It was a 2.5-hour casual walk from the Shirahama Seaside Onsen Hotel to this point. One can catch the bus but walking is faster from going from one scenic spot to the next one.

Minakata Kumagusu Museum

Reviewed By Aubrey B - Tanabe, Japan

I came here for a quick visit to meet the curator of the museum, and as a result I didn't get to get to leisurely experience the entire museum.
There are replica buildings outside along with a garden that you can freely enter, but be aware of hornets (suzumebachi) which are very dangerous. The Exhibitions and pamphlets are mainly in Japanese, so you may miss out on some interesting historical tidbits if you lack language ability. Make sure to check out the website before visiting (in English)!
That being said, it is a very aesthetically pleasing place and is definitely worth a visit.

Shirahama Aquarium Kyoto University

The marine fauna and flora of Nanki Shirahama are exceptionally rich. This aquarium presents those highly diverse organisms. This aquarium features exhibits of invertebrates. More than 500 species of invertebrates are on the display throughout the year, which makes this one of the largest invertebrate Exhibitions in Japan.

It is small aquarium but it is not clouded so you can take your time to look. There is a city bus to get around to this area .You can go to Kumagusu museum on the mountain only takes 5 minutes walking from aquarium. It is a beautiful place just even go down the beach and chill. Its cool place.

Went in the afternoon and a couple of hours was all we needed. Interactive and educational. A little dated but still managed to amuse my teenager.

There are a number of these free foot baths around Shirahama, including three or four with some view of the water. All seem to be clean and well maintained, and the soak is nice after a long day of walking.
Please, as the city reminds us repeatedly, do take off your shoes AND socks before using the baths.

Hei-sogen Park

Reviewed By MM R

I really recommend the cherry blossom season which is the early April there, but even the plum season around in the middle of March the park is so beautiful to look around.
The trail is very easy to walk, some people bring own lunch and picnicking. It is very peaceful and quiet. I love to go there just for relaxing.
