Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park was first established as the Ashizuri National park in 1955. It became the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park in 1972 after designating the Uwakai area and the Marine Park zone as park additions. The main feature of this park is the diverse landscape which consists of coastal areas including islands in the southwest part of Shikoku and inland mountains with an altitude of around 1,000 m. Cliffs developed from coastal terraces extend in the Ashizuri area, and subtropical marine life and coral communities, blessed by the Kuroshio Current, can be found. Meanwhile, delicate coves of the submergent coastline and island scenery are a few of many charms of the Uwakai area, and beautiful underwater scenery centered around soft corals can be appreciated.
The geology and trails are great, but my very favorite bit was the Ashizuri Underwater Observatory, which is super retro and is accessed by a thin little bridge. total hidden gem^^

Ritsurin Garden is a superb cultural asset that conveys the characteristics of the daimyo strolling gardens that were typically seen in the 17th and 18th century. A daimyo strolling garden is a type of traditional Japanese garden in which ponds and hills are expertly constructed over a vast tract of land, and you can enjoy the garden's space as you leisurely walk around inside.
This garden is full of beautiful detail. The trees are manicured immaculately and the landscaping of each view is exquisite. Even though we visited in early November and the autumn colours weren't yet fully showing the garden still looked fantastic.

“Visitors and animals in their natural state”is the theme of our park. Based on this theme, our green and lush zoo has eliminated cages and fences, and recreated the animals natural habitats with plants and rocks, etc. The zoo is divided into several zones, including the Temperate Forest, Tropical Forest, Africa and Australia Zones, and the Jungle Museum. More than 1000 animals from about 110 sp

Our time frame was too tight to stay any longer than the day visit. We found the islands transport system was very efficient & inexpensive. We chose to take the bus to the end of the line for a fee of 100 Yen, then the free shuttle thru to the end museum “Chichu Art Museum” then to walk back to the return bus & checking out the various art works along the way. Menu photo opportunities. Our schedule didn’t allow time to look at the many other attractions along the way. The arrive early & had a wonderful breakfast at Sparkie blended coffee. Very good price & delicious. A late lunch at Yuunagi cafe before leaving.

The Makino Botanical gardens are built on the slopes of Godaisan - a small mountain East of Kochi's downtown. We were a group of 4 people and sadly only had one day in Kochi so we tool a taxi from our cruise ship directly to Makino to save time The gardens were built to honour the Kochi botanist Dr Tomitaro Makino, who was regarded as the father of Japanese botany At the reception entrance you can pick up maps of the grounds, we were very lucky to be there for the first flush of the cherry blossoms. Visitors are encouraged to walk on the grass and in amongst the trees which made for a really special experience. The conservatory was absolutely beautiful with a stunning collection of orchids well worth a visit and right next to the hillside temple of Chikurin-ji temple so you can visit both places in one journey
