Loch Muick

Enjoyed the 10 mile walk on a lovely autumn day. The tree colours were beautiful and the Loch and surrounding area stunning. It’s a flat walk with a few rough paths to navigate , just the place to get away from it all.

Enjoyed a pleasant walk here on a sunny autumn day. Unfortunately the visitor centre was closed but managed to navigate our way around on foot. Climbed to the Knockie viewpoint and walked around the estate. Just the place to blow the cobwebs away and get away from it all

Craigievar Castle

17th-century castle owned by the same family for over 350 years. Open April to September; access is by guided tours only. There are steep spiral stairs to the upper floors. A stunning castle in a wonderful setting, said to be the inspiration for Disney's castles.

A lovely old tower house converted to a fairly modern house. comfortable for the owners but with stairs linking the rooms. you can only visit with a guided tour and i think you need more time to take it all in and see everything properly. however it still worth a visit just to see how such tall narrow house were used and what the owners managed to do with them.

Linn O' Dee

The Linn O' Dee gives unrivalled access to some fine examples of classic features of a Highland landscape: remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland and parts of the high Cairngorm plateau. Fifteen of the Cairngorms Munros can be found on Mar Lodge estate. The less adventurous can enjoy our way marked trails, starting from the car park. The car park also hosts a seasonal information hut and toilet facilities. Parking in the car park is £3 per day for non members or free for National Trust for Scotland or National Trust members.

Worth the short drive to view this gorge where the river changes from a gentle stream to a raging deep gorge and back to a gentle stream

Braemar Castle

Enjoy a guided tour of 12 furnished rooms in this 17th century Castle. Ghosts and villains, Jacobites and high fashion, the story begins in 1628 when the Earl of Mar built Mar Castle as his Highland hunting lodge. Associated with all 3 Jacobite uprisings, the castle was burned by the infamous Jacobite, the Black Colonel, and was the base for the Earl of Mar as he planned the 1715 uprising. After the 1745 rebellion, it was a garrison for Hanoverian soldiers stationed there to make sure that no-one dared break the law and wear tartan or carry weapons. In the 20th century, the castle was home to American fashion journalist, Editor of Harper's Bazaar and wife of the Chief of Clan Farquharson, who decorated the rooms in her signature Schiaparelli pink. English and German audio guides and tours with friendly local guides who enjoy sharing their knowledge and stories of the area. There are hidden teddy bears for the children to count as well as a small gift shop which also sells teas, coffees and hot chocolate.

Although the young volunteer who gave us the tour said she’d only been doing tours for a couple of weeks, she did a beautiful job. The castle has a fascinating history and the furnishings tell the story of what life here was like at various times in the castle’s history. We are glad we made this part of our Scottish castle tour!

The Braemar Gathering

Reviewed By itchyfeet2014 - Glasgow, United Kingdom

The sun was shining this year. All our travel plans went well. We were ushered in to car park 5 and a five minute walk through some woods took us to The Braemar Gathering. What a stunning location, what an amazing day of fantastic events. It was all go for hours. A visual spectacle that had us on the edge of our seats with tug of war, hammer throwing, caber tossing, fell running, relay races, fantastic Highland dancing, wonderful pipe bands and lots more. The highlight was the arrival of Her Majesty the Queen and the royal party. The Queen looked wonderful. Clearly the royals enjoy the day- they looked like they were! The whole day was so relaxed. The time just flew in. It was great to have a seat in area C but a bit of a squeeze to get in and out. This area was opposite the Royal Pavillion so we got a lovely view of Her Majesty. There are lots of stalls selling drinks, burgers and lots more. Plenty of toilets and ticket upgrades are available once inside the arena. Quite simply the loveliest of days out. We followed the pipe bands from the centre of Braemar at 12 am into the arena. We had wonderful views of the pipers and it was a brilliant atmosphere. Scotland at its very best. Buy your tickets early on line, but there are tickets available on the day.

The tour ends with a dram of the award-winning Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Single Highland Malt. Following Scottish Government guidelines through their phased re-opening approach, the time has come to open our doors and welcome back our visitors from 26th April 2021. To ensure the health and wellbeing of our employees and visitors, we will be implementing a number of precautionary measures. Find out how we are keeping you safe on our website before you visit us.

I took my mum and dad here to tour this magnificent gem in Royal Deeside. It was fantastic. A small distillery which allows you to get an appreciation for the art of whisky making. We were greeted with a very warm welcome by Eric, followed by an amazing tour of the distillery by Alex who was so helpful and friendly showing us around patiently answering our list of questions and we shared stories which made the tour feel really personal then afterwards we enjoyed a wee dram. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Royal Lochnagar and I’d like to thank both Alex and Eric for making out time there so special.

Crathie Kirk

Reviewed By RicRiordon - Meaford, Canada

We visited here the day of our departure from the area and the day before the Queen and her companions came to worship there apparently. Although we missed Her Royal Highness, I'm afraid I might have found her presence and my motives for worship somewhat challenged by her celebrity – maybe just as well. We were fortunate to have a quiet visit and hear the enthusiastic stories of our church hostess on the Royal's frequent visits to this humble building over the decades. This place of worship is full of interesting history, sculptures and photographs, well worth a visit.

Been here a couple of times since transformation and what a superb job they have done. At the front there is lots of local info, quality gifts and crafts, local library, weather info. At rear is separate tearoom cafe , reproduction rail carriage etc.. really well done and beautiful decor. Menu is very good and was only after ordering my usual excellent Cullen Skink and carrot soup did we notice that you can get smaller plates for £1(!) less. Really very reasonable prices. Self service but all with a smile and couldn’t be more helpful and cheery. All in all a great addition to Ballater

We visited Balmoral this week and we loved every minute of the experience! What an absolute privilege to be given access to part of the Queens’ PRIVATE residence and for only £15 per person. Our tour guides, Kathleen and Gavin were excellent. They were extremely knowledgable and their good humour kept things fun and light hearted, whilst very informative. The fact that we only saw one room in the castle didn’t matter as the information and stories provided in the stable house and grounds was plentiful. We arrived at 11am and didn’t leave until 3.30pm as we were allowed to walk around the grounds freely. We loved the history of the estate and the fact that we were able walk in the footsteps of The Queen and Queen Victoria before her was exhilarating! Lastly...we have to thank Gavin for advising us of the best spot to camp in our motorhome overnight! What a view to wake up to...overlooking the river Dee in the Cairngorms National Park! Brilliant!
