If you are thinking about a Baltic cruise, it is worth it in my opinion to select a ship that is small enough to move through the Kiel canal. This should be ships smaller than 950 people. The varied terrain mostly quite rural and the locks are the high points. Our particular ship had several people on the shore who held up signs then raced ahead of the ship to do it again. All good fun.

It really is nice to travel the length of the Kiel canal by car as I did. I would have preferred to do so by bicycle, and I intend to do so next time. This canal and its functioning, the regulation of the water from and to the river Eider and the locks are really impressive.
