When one passes by and just sees a bronze statue group it cannot imagine that it is actually part of a daily tradition in the city. This monument for those who have fallen during the wars has a bell in the middle which tools everyday at 18:00. Police stop the trafiic around it at that time and it kind of forces all who are nearby to respect a minute's silence. It seems that it is something unique to Savona

Visiting Savona is so easy and you can do it in 3/4 hours. Arriving from Savona Cruise Terminal the first thing you find is the Tourist Information Office. Staff are very helpful and they explain in detail how you can visit Savona interesting places by walk. You can also have a ride on the Fun Train which starts from near the Terminal.
Entrance to the chapel costs €2.00 per person. The most famous chapel being the one in Rome. Savona's chapel was built by Pope Sixtus IV as a mausoleum for his parents in their hometown. Next to the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption you can find the chapel which was constructed between 1481 and 1483. During the 18th century the interior of the building was covered in frescoes and stuccoes by the local artists. It's worth a visit.

The fortress Priamar which was constructed by the Republic of Genoa was designed by Giovanni Maria Olgiati and built between 1542 and 1544.It was purposely built to protect Savona's territory from possible attacks Savoy. This fortress had passed through many conflicts and parts of it had to be demolished to crate space for new structures. In 1820 it became a prison and during the Risorgimmento the Italian patriot Guiseppe Mazzini was jailed in this Priamar Fortress. This fortress could house up to 500 prisoners and it remained as Italy's main military prison until 1903.

When you reach Savona Cruise Terminal the first thing that you see is a tower which is Torre Leon Pancaldo. From the Cruise Terminal it is very easy to go to the Tourist Information Office where you are greeted by friendly staff who explain in detail how to visit the most interesting places of Savona. If you have good feet and on a sunny day you wear a hat you can easily reach every place of interest. We did all this in roughly 4 hours. If it's a Sunday we will have an extra bonus of visiting a very large antique market.
Torre Leon Pancaldo is also known as Torre della Quarda or Torretta. It dates back to the 14th century and is the symbol of Savona. It houses a statuette of Our Lady of Mercy in a niche on its south facade.

Darsena area is full of nice, high rated tripadvisor restaurants. Eat here and you will not get disappointed. Relaxed and vibrant atmosphere and Italian spirit are normal here. Admire big cruise ships entering the port - they are really a great to look at.

Architectural locations are of great interest to us. This is one of my favorites on our journey since leaving the US in March. The facade is so wide I needed to go to a street at an angle to achieve a full view. The workmanship of the pieces shows exactly what kind of artisans were employed in creating this masterpiece. I'd allow an hour, really, to take in all the beauty.

While in Savona we visited all the historic places by feet within 4 hours. One of the visits was The Brandale Tower which dates back to the 12th century and was built next to Elders' Palace. This tower rests on gothic arch-vaults which are the entrance to the old town centre. Its belfry houses the huge bell known as 'A Campanassa'
