Just a stone's throw across St. Mary's River from Michigan is quaint Sault Ste. Marie, known to locals simply as "The Soo". This out of the way destination offers attractions year round, with ample downhill and cross-country skiing as well as the Bon Soo Winter Carnival during the snowy months and scenic canal and lock boat tours, kayak excursions, parks and a beautiful promenade to be enjoyed when the sun comes out. OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie is popular with locals and visitors all year long.

A hands on museum featuring 29 planes including the 1st Beaver float plane produced. 2 award winning movies including Wildfires! A fire fighting adventure in 3-D. Take a ride in the flight simulator, climb an actual fire tower enjoy fun times in our Children's Centre. Due to the Covid-19, we will be open Wednesday to Sunday 11-5 . Masks are required. Closed Good Friday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Boxing Day and New Years Day.
Situated in the original 1920' seaplane hangars at the St. Mary's river, the museum is a great glimpse into what goes into accessing and exploring the Canadian North, even today. I specifically want to point out the hands-on approach in the museum. Planes and other exhibits are not cordoned off asking visitors to stay away. You are encouraged to climb into planes, to get a feel for what it is like and to have a real experience. Well done! I would plan an hour and a half to go through.

The Sault Ste. Marie and 49th Field Regiment Historical Society Museum exists to collect, preserve, study and exhibit artifacts and archival materials which illustrate the history of the people and the development of Sault Ste. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the AGA! Art enthusiasts that we are, we booked a guided tour and painting lesson via email ahead of time and we were so glad we did. Upon arrival at the gallery, we were made to feel so welcome by Megumi, who was also so very helpful booking our tour and lesson via email in advance. Samantha, one of the gallery's summer students, did a wonderful job giving us a guided tour of the exhibit that celebrates Canada 150 through a chronological journey, highlighting Canadian artists and those inspired by Canadian artists and landscapes. Their Group of Seven collection is fabulous and gave us insight into a wider variety of Group of Seven artists than we had previously known. Great Indigenous Art presence as well as some beautiful selections from local artists. The large watercolour of Sault Ste Marie by John Hartman that is on display in the front foyer is particularly stunning. After a quick visit to the gift shop (wonderful variety of treasures) we were given coffee by Megumi and then went outside to have our Group of Seven inspired art lesson with Morgan, another summer student. Both she and Samantha were so incredibly friendly and personable and such wonderful representation of their community. Both are University Art students and their passion and enthusiasm was so refreshing. We spent close to two hours painting outdoors with them, talking about acrylic techniques and various Group of Seven styles of painting landscapes. We were given brushes and sketching pencils and mini-canvases to keep and thoroughly enjoyed our time outdoors, overlooking St. Mary's River. If you love galleries as much as we do you will enjoy this lovely little spot. General admission is $7 and if you are looking for a fun, creative activity, we highly recommend the lesson and guided tour experience that we chose for $30 each. Not everyone's type of activity but definitely worth it to us.

The M.S Norgoma is a museum ship owned and operated by the St. Marys River Marine Heritage Centre Board of Directors and is currently located on the waterfront in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. From the Great Lake’s shipping channels, to the canoes of Fur Traders and modern passenger vessels, to the First Nations people who gathered on these shores, the marine heritage of this region is both significant and far reaching. The M.S Norgoma tells the marine heritage of Sault Ste Marie, the Algoma District, and Great Lakes Shipping.
