The northwest market town of Sapa is colorful and charming, providing the perfect oasis in the midst of a strenuous mountain trek or rice-paddy tour. The Gothic stone church at the center of town is a bull’s-eye in the center of shops and stalls, serving as a reminder of the town’s French missionary influence. Dine on Vietnamese or European-inspired cuisine downtown, and don’t miss the Saturday night "love market," one of the most potent—and strictest—single’s nights imaginable.

I did not stay at the Saigonese home stay, but they did arrange two treks for me. I am commenting on their excellent service. Both experiences were outstanding. I am an avid and experienced trekker and mountaineer, and part of my reason for visiting Sa Pa was to climb some of the region's notable peaks (e.g., Fansipan, Pu Ta Leng, Bach Moc Luong Tu). I decided to hire a local guide for these treks because I didn't want to hunt around for obscure trailheads, and I wanted to support the local economy during the pandemic-related economic downturn. I ran into two problems with this: 1) Besides Fansipan, there is very little actual mountain hiking in the area. Most of the trekking is centered on villages and rice paddies close to the city center (with the exception of the fantastic trekking tours offered by Ethos). Even on Fansipan, the vast amount of traffic on the mountain is via the cable car. Therefore, it's difficult to find someone to arrange mountain guides for anything besides Fansipan (and even trekking Fansipan is considered something of a specialty these days since the cable car went in). 2) Nearly none of the local tour operators I contacted had any knowledge of mountain peaks besides Fansipan. One of them, VietTrekking, had a very nice website with information about the more obscure mountains. When I contacted them, however, they said they didn't have any guides available to do the treks. Another company told me that they didn't have any English-speaking guides available (even though I told them that was not a requirement) and refused to help further. Saigonese solved both of these problems for me. They were able to arrange a local guide up Fansipan (which is required, no matter what anyone tells you) for a one-day climb. Then, a week later, Saigonese was able to arrange a guide to take me on a three-day push to the peak of Bach Moc Luong Tu. This was also excellent. This was no pampered trek: the trek was challenging, beautiful, and dirty. Exactly what I was looking for. And in both cases, my guides were people from local hill tribes. I was happy to keep my money in these communities that are frequently overlooked. Saigonese did something that other companies in Sa Pa couldn't or wouldn't do: they arranged guides for mountain treks that were inconvenient and out-of-the-way. I will definitely be back to Sa Pa, and I will use Saigonese again. I recommend you use them, too.

We were contacted immediately after booking the trip and all communication was good. Guide collected us at 9.15am as arranged and was a nice Mhong girl. Unfortunately she spoke very little English and clearly knew nothing about anywhere she was taking us, or could not share any knowledge due to no English. Not her fault but clearly the fault of the tour operator not caring at all about our (my daughter and I) experience. I texted him pretty much straight away and he finally decided he could send another guide. By then we’d met another couple of people on a private trip whose guide was fantastic - great English, very knowledgeable about the area, the tribes and the villages. We paid her and joined the tour and had a great day. The tour operator lied to Aviator and said he had cancelled the tour due to bad weather. A lie designed to deflect any blame - pathetic. He refunded our money which is the only good thing I can say.

I made a phone call to this office on the day I arrived at Sa Pa. The office kindly arranged a private tour only for me swiftly. Detailed communications were available through Whatsapp. My tour was arranged on the next day. In the morning, my dear tour guide, Ms. Tzu, came to my hotel to see me. And my fantastic tour started. My destination was far below Sa Pa town. The way down to the villages in the valley was like a jungle trekking. You need to be prepared well. My food slipped several times due to wet and foggy weather but it was not the case for TZU. Mountain girl! This tour was not something comfortably prepared for tourists but for the one who is willing to go local. And the tour guide is a real ethical tribe who currently lives in a village (Lao Chai). Walking in a paddy field around her house was a fantastic experience. How many years ago last time did I do so in my hometown? I have to come back in a season when rice fields are filled with crops.

We had an amazing experience when we were on the cruise ship! But when we were picked up on the bus for our drive to the cruise ship, we were very uncomfortable with our guide. The man in charge made multiple jokes about making us eat dog while on the cruise. We understand there are some cultural differences, but we were not expecting to have our honeymoon cruise start with a man showing us dead dog, snake, and other animals on his phone, really committing to making us uncomfortable for the joke, while we are stuck on a bus for hours with no way to remove ourselves. Many people on the bus were confused about if his jokes were for real. The start made me frantically google Saphire Cruises to make sure I didn’t imagine the glowing reviews. It was shocking and disappointing. Once the man got us to the cruise ship we were relieved to find that the rest of the guides and staff were absolutely wonderful. Amazing guides, lots of chances to explore and learn. Beautiful views and great accommodations. It’s too bad that the horrible start is what sticks with me.
