The 4 of us agreed that is was one of the most beautiful places we saw on Sao Miguel Island and that's saying a lot because the whole island is beautiful. There is a steep hike down to a beach area and it's really well worth doing. It was so lovely to be by the lake at the bottom of the crater and listen to the sound of nothing except nesting birds. Amazing.

Go in the morning for best photographs and to get ahead of most visitors (sun at back). If you can't walk very far or are short of time, don't park in the parking lot by the main road. If the gate is open, drive in and follow the dirt road that everyone is hiking along to the very base of the ridge where the trail goes uphill to the actual "miradouro"/viewpoint. There is room for several cars there. The view is amazing. If you have bad knees, bring trekking poles. It's about 5 minutes uphill to the viewpoint, depending on your uphill capability.

Great full day trip from Ponta Delgada east to Furnas & Tera Nostra Garden, Nordeste, along the north coast with Samual da Silva Regao (Greencorner Tours -([email protected];(+351)911936846. Second great trip west to Sete Cidades and Logoa. He grew up on the island, speaks excellent English and is a safe driver - highly recommend! He can tailor an excursion specific to your interests; has a van that carries 8.

We walked from Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande to this spot along the hiking trail, and it's ingenious in the way it uses a giant pipe (which services the hydro electric dam next to the waterfall) as part of the route. The heights on this route by the waterfall are something else! I'd also recommend visiting the abandoned dam at the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande end of this route, which we almost didn't do but was absolutely worth the 10-15 minute detour.

Beautiful old church on the top of the hill. Has amazing tile work and stone work with breath taking views.

Wonderful area with waterfalls, river and a lovely landscape with old beautiful houses with amazing flowers. Even though the area is not too big, everything looks perfect and it is truly a little paradise. I went during low season (November) and there were not many people, which made the visit even more enjoyable. To me it is a must-see in Sao Miguel. .
