Overlooking Cidade Velha, approach from turning on the road from Praia.
Very nice visit and I recommend hiring the local tour guide to walk you through the fort and explain the history of the area.

The camp is a very evocative and oppressive place. It's deliberately hot, and you can easily imagine how awful it was for the prisoners. There is now interpretation interspersed throughout the prison buildings. You learn about the different phases of the prisons use, the awful conditions, particular politicians and doctors who terrorised the inhabitants and everyday life. There are a few artefacts linked to the camp and most powerfully, photographs of the prisoners. We struggled to get an alguer back to Tarrafal waiting by the camp but very quickly got one waiting by the roadside.
