What to do and see in Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region: The Best Food Tours

September 5, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Santiago is one of those metropolitan joys where the more you look, the more you find. Funky cafes and dance clubs dot Bellavista, Forest Park art collections range from pre-Columbian to contemporary, and architecture runs the gamut from the 16th-century San Francisco Church to mirrored office towers. Shop with the locals at Mall Panora¡mico and give your palate meals to remember with hearty Chilean fare.

We selected this tour based on the positive reviews and the tour turned out to be better than we had anticipated. I was contacted prior to the tour to ask if there were any food restrictions and to confirm place and time of the pick up. Suzie was our guide. Not only was she extremely pleasant but she is very knowledgeable of wines and the vineyards in the area. We went to a large organic winery and then to a smaller boutique winery (both family owned) which provided a nice contrast. We were glad we were not driving as the pours at both wineries were more than generous. We were impressed with the area and would not hesitate to recommend the tour. If Suzie is available, you will not be disappointed. Pam C.

I arranged our private tour with Mauricio via email. He was very professional and helpful in our decision to do a private tour of Valparaiso / Vina del Mar and return to San Antonio for our back to back cruise. Because of COVID-19, our 2nd cruise was cancelled and our tour guide Francisco was very agreeable to taking us to Santiago airport after our Valparaiso and Vina del Mar tour. Our tour guide, Francisco was very professional, knowledgeable and pleasant - he made our tour very enjoyable and spoke excellent English. We enjoyed the seafood empanadas, recommended by Mauricio. Thank you Mauricio and Francisco for a fun last day in Chile.

Carla and Brian were amazing guides and provided informed and entertaining commentary for our trip out to Valparaiso and Vina Del Mar. Communication prior to hotel pick up was great and we had a relaxing time walking the cobble-stoned streets of Valparaiso learning the history and taking in the street art. We had lunch at Vina Del Mar with local beers and Pisco sour cocktails!! Highly recommend this tour or any other tour with Discover Santiago- we would have like to have ventured into the mountains, however, COVID-19 had other plans for us and we had to return to Australia following the cancellation of our holiday.

Our host, Noelle was a lovely, enthusiastic and very experienced cook. We started the morning with a tour of several local markets that provided a great experience with lovely colors, aromas, busy people selling and buying the freshest fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and freshly cooked local dishes. After we bought everything for the recepies, we made our way to their lovely home. She immediately put us to work, we prepared Pisco sour that kept our spirits high the entire afternoon. We made Pebre, Ceviche, Empanada de pino and Charquican. The wine was a perfect companion to our meal. Noelle speaks fluent French and English, very cosmopolitan and easy going. It was a really fun day.

My girlfriend an I finished our vacation in Chile with a great ride in the Andes led by Matias and Gabriel. Coming from Vancouver BC we are spoiled with great biking and were excited to ride some trails near Santiago. We were picked up from our hotel in the morning and within minutes we were pedaling up singletrack; passing by horses, cactuses, cows and condors! We stopped at the top for lunch with a view with sandwiches provided by Andes Explora. The descent was long, fast and fun. A good trail for all levels of riding with only few challenging technical sections and plenty of opportunity for speed. It was our first time trying an E-Mtb which took some getting used to but allowed us to gain elevation quickly without much fuss. Expect to find technical sections of the climb a bit awkward if you haven't been on an E-mtb before, and once you're off the bike these bikes are heavy to push, so there's still some sweating to be done on the way up. Once the ride was done we were given a cold beer then returned back to our hotel. 5 star, would ride again. Thanks guys!

This was a totally unique and out this world experience. Watching the stars from the middle of the Andes in thermal pools was incredible, the pools themselves are lovely and the setting is beautiful. Ishmal and Paulo were excellent guides, and very knowledgeable about the landscape and Chile and have a genuine love for their country and the outdoors. Dinner afterwards in a lovely locals house was a nice touch to, being invited into their home and having a glimpse at their life was really humbling. Thanks guys for one the highlights of our trip!

We had a great trip to the observatory. We were picked up by Susie who was super friendly and informative. When we arrived Demaso already had a telescope set up so we could see sunstorms before it set. We got to see stars like Sirius while the sky was still light. As the night went on we used more and more advanced telescopes, and saw several stars and constellations not visible in the northern hemisphere. Demaso was extremely knowledgeable and passionate, we couldn’t have asked for a better host. He is so generous to open his home to guests to share his passion! He also has three dogs who were very sweet. We can’t recommend this enough, and would love to go again.
