The archaeological site contains walls from ancient Inca dwellings.
We try to get to Samaipata at least once or twice a year. This year was special though. Our oldest son together with our oldest grandson (our oldest grandchild for that matter) was in Santa Cruz for a visit. So, accompanied by the queen (wife/mother/grandmother) we took the three hour trip up the narrow winding road that leads from Santa Cruz to Samaipata, a small, thriving town famed for El Fuerte, a religious site dating back more than two thousand years. Located on one of the higher hills in the area, this ancient religious site can be reached by an even more winding, steeply climbing road (paved all the way I should add) that puts your car and the driver to a bit of a test. But El Fuerte is well worth the trip. The site apparently was established by the Chane around the second century BC and much later occupied by the Incas followed by the Guarani and Spanish. There is a well-marked route through the site that features the main ceremonial site, and housing and building foundations from all the major eras. Over these past years, the whole site has been expanded and protected and there are excellent viewing ramps/platforms wherever required. There knowledgeable guides available to accompany you through the site and provide additional information. Associated with El Fuerte is the Museo Arqueologico, small but exceedingly well presented that should not be missed. It is located very conveniently near the main plaza.

GUEMBE is a must visit in Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia, come and experience a natural paradise of more than 24 hectares, surrounded by exotic plants, lush forests and exotic animals typical of the region. GUEMBE is place where you will find a beautiful variety of flora and fauna, natural areas, ecological trails, lagoons, 19 swimming pools and recreational activities for all ages. GUEMBE is 15 minutes from wherever you are staying in Santa Cruz and it has the specific natural areas such as the largest enclosed butterfly area, the largest aviary in the country and second in LatAm, kayacking, waterfalls, great gastronomy, incredible service and a peace and calm that you will experience only here. The park is almos endless and there is one spot where you will be able to breathe the purest air right in the heart of lating america. Don't forget to visit the top of the aviary the view and the purity of the clean and natural air have no comparison to anything in the world.
We planned to spend 2 days in the Guembe resort but at the end we prolonged to three days and skipped the Samaipata. This was our end of 3 weeks travelling around Bolivia and we wanted to rest before flying home. Why we loved the place: 1. interaction with animals. We were so close to parrots (all kinds, but we loved the huuge Aras), monkeys and butterflies like nowhere else. 2. butterflies. This all started with butterflies and they do great tours where they explain how the butterfly is born and how long they live.. and the species that have are amazing / butterfly bigger than my hand.. 3. pools. There are so many places to rest near water.. two main pools and several smaller ones plus natural ponds where we rented a kayak. 4. many activities for everyone> animals, mini golf, beer garden, a spot for kids to play 5. morning/evening walks. we stayed overnight and had the park and animals for ourselves. They open at 9:30 and close around 6pm. Ther service is nice, food okay, espresso small and strong enough :).

Jardin Botanico Santa Cruz Yesterday we visited the Botanical Garden, with the high hopes of catching a glimpse of a hero of mine - a Sloth! Unfortunately, the sneaky guy was nowhere to be found. Mind you, this park is 217 hectares of lush forest and trails. We only spent about 3 hours there and even though we sprayed ourselves twice (with citronella) the mosquitos were relentless. My fiancee was their victim, as she got quite a few bites. We did see plenty of birds and fishes, an alligator and a few turtles in the lagoon. Another turtle was roaming the park like a maniac and almost got me This place is definitely worth a visit if you're in town
