This beautiful stretch of undeveloped wilderness is home to hundreds of birds, deer, pigs and other wildlife.
If you want to see a different side of Spain, take a tour to see this huge Doñana National Park, a little more than 1 hour from Seville. An 8 hour day trip takes you to the different ecosystems of the gulf of the Guadalquivir river: marshes, swamp, pine forest and sand dunes. So many birds, everywhere to listen to or to see! Flamencos, spoon bills, storks, hawks, big and small birds, ... Even if I am not a birdwatcher, I just enjoy them. For a North American, deers and rabbits are common. We got to see 3 deers, and 1 hare. Unfortunately, no luck with the endangered lynx. As a bonus, we saw the pilgrimage church of El Rocio. (Naturanda.es tours. Lunch at Matalascañas beach). Don’t go there in Winter, the birds will be in Africa.

All the beaches along the riverfront at Sanlúcar de Barrameda are just amazing. This stretch of it also has the ferry crossing. You need to look carefully to see just where this is. There isn’t an actual landing strip or jetty, the vehicles have to drive across the sand in order to board the ferry to Doñana just across the river Guadalquivir. 4-wheel drive best. Or 4-legged – we saw horses crossing with their riders. I guess that the crossing takes about 10-15 minutes. If it’s a weekend morning, you might be lucky and see a big queue of vehicles waiting to cross, and get to watch as they try to fit in as many as possible at one go. We saw a large contingent of people, all of them dressed in riding boots, waiting by their cars as the ferrymen did the enormous jigsaw puzzle of fitting them in. Our guess was that they would get 15 on, but finally it was nearly twice that. An interesting twenty minutes for us! The sand is pale, fine. It feels almost like talcum powder on your feet. The beaches are at street level, no climbing down steps to reach them. The river is tidal, so the sand gets swept by the tides near the edges, and by municipal cleaning operatives in their tractors for the rest. Some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen! The only drawback is that they are not well supplied with showers, lavatories, etc. But these are just fabulous!
