A series of sculptures depicting the last hours of Christ's life. The Shrine is located on a mesa. Visitors walk a 1-mile path to reach it.
I had found information about Stations of the Cross through researching our trip to Southwest Colorado. This site is worth the short drive from Highway 160 out of Fort Garland on CO 159 South. It was a beautiful drive and the shrine was amazing. The art work is beyond describable, the hike is easy if you take your time to read the info at each station and includes gorgeous vistas of the San Luis Valley. The chapel is quaint and peaceful. Don’t miss the walk through the hillside where saints and martyrs’ sandstone busts and stories of their untimely deaths through Mexican history are told. Very educational. One of our favorite parts of our trip. San Luis was also celebrating Santa Ana y Santiago with a parade and other happenings in town. The San Luis people are so friendly and you gain a huge sense of community from them. What a wonderful side trip it was.
