So many of Madrid’s buildings look like castles, you’ll think you’ve stumbled into a fairytale. Even City Hall is astounding, with its white pinnacles and neo-Gothic features. A self-guided architecture tour can begin by the great bear statue in the central Puerta del Sol. Wander by the fanciful Royal Palace before absorbing the natural beauty of Retiro Park, then visit one of the city’s many museums. You could happily cap off each day by nibbling on forkfuls of paella while sipping Spanish rioja.

I visited at the time of a pandemic and had to wear a mask, as did the staff. The stadium (opened 2017) is beautiful, with great facilities including a terrace where you can sit in the sun, have a coffee, or go into a restaurant and have a full meal (which I did). The museum is excellent. I particularly liked the model of a teenager’s bedroom and his development as a young footballer . . . which turned out to be a player that I knew well (but I won’t spoil it for others by saying who). Much to my surprise I was the only person on the tour. It was well planned and organised - I saw so much. My guide Sara explained the restrictions and rules, prioritising my safety and that of others. Sara was a superb guide - professional, knowledgeable, spoke good English, and was warm and friendly. She gave lots of opportunities to ask questions and was very interested in my recollections of players and matches from the past. She took lots of photos for me which was really great. With masks obscuring much of her face and mine, communication was much harder than usual, but she overcame the problems of masks and speaking a foreign language - her eyes were so expressive it made up for not seeing her face, and her gestures and movements were natural and communicative. She communicated the excitement of a new stadium, the joy of watching the team and seeing the goals and trophies . . . she glowed with excitement and joy when recounting the glorious history of recent years. All the staff were good - thoughtful, kind, and flexible, and the tour is well planned and a memorable experience. I’d thoroughly recommend it to others. Just one thing I’d like to see improved: STOP BEATING LIVERPOOL FC! ????
