What to do and see in San Antonio de Areco, Central Argentina: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

July 31, 2021 Milan Banda

A compact small town nearly 70 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, San Antonio de Areco is in the heart of the Argentine Pampas region. It’s a great 1½-hour day trip by car or bus from Buenos Aires—or the perfect jumping-off point for those who choose to visit at a nearby estancia, or a traditional large rural ranch and estate. Major attractions here include the colonial sights of San Antonio de Areco itself, the Museum of the Gaucho (which celebrates Argentine cowboys), and a variety of estancias themselves, which are located within two hours of San Antonio de Areco. If you don’t feel like planning your own itinerary, several tour and travel companies will coordinate your visit and arrange your estancia stay.

I had a brilliant 4 days (10 hrs in total) learning Spanish with Pato. First of all Pato is a lovely person, very welcoming, personable and lively. She immediately put me at ease and by the time I left I felt like an extended part of her family. Secondly, Pato really knows how to teach and has excellent technical knowledge and was able to express that fluently to me in English, which really helped. She used fun and inventive ways to help learn. My favourite was studying verb endings and pronunciation in song lyrics and then singing it together. Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club (my choice) has never sounded so good! I just wish I could have stayed longer. Finally, not only do you get some excellent Spanish lessons but Pato goes out of her way to accommodate you and ensure you enjoy your time in San Antonio de Areco. It was like having a personal concierge, with amazing local tips, introductions, shopping trips and organising tennis and horse riding lessons for me at a very reasonable rate. Don’t hesitate to choose Pato if you are looking for a fully immersive way to learn Spanish. I enjoyed my time so much in San Antonio de Areco and that was largely thanks to Pato. Thanks again Pato, I’ve made a new friend and learnt Spanish at the same time. Jamie x
