It’s been 200 years or so since he lived here, but Mozart is still very much Salzburg’s favorite son. Visit the composer’s residence and birthplace, then explore the Altstadt (Old City), taking in the baroque architecture. If your musical tastes run more "Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" than "Requiem in D Minor," catch one of the many Sound of Music tours and follow in the footsteps of the Von Trapps.

Located in the square in old down, Mozart watches over the crowds. Good picture spot. Can't visit Salzburg without seeing the statue.

The Radfahrer Sculpture is a sculpture close to the western bank of Makartsteg. This nude bronze statue was created by Salzburg sculptor Lotte Ranft in 1992. The sculpture depicts a cyclists leaning against his bicycle with their head raised toward the sky as if enjoying the sun. A pretty cool sculpture and one worth seeking out.

Seeing this modern art piece alongside the classical 19th century homage to Friedrich Schiller, and next to the University Auditorium, was intriguing. Erwin Wurm, the Austrian artist, has created a though provoking and attention grabbing sculpture. Gherkins, the subject of his creation and all human sized, seem to be sprouting from the pavement. The assemblage of the two works next to a venerable learning institution, is testament that a city regarded as traditional, also has an ironic sense of humour.

This is a beautiful sight in front of Salzburg Cathedral. Unfortunately for my family and I, we were unable to appreciate the full beauty as it was under renovation and was encased in perspex. Still the view of the Fortress was picturesque!

Given the name of the statue and location next to Salzburg Cathedral, I was half expecting another depiction of the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus. Surprisingly (a welcome one though), it's actually a copy of "The Cloak of Conscience and Tolerance" sculpture by Anna Chromý. That is, the sculpture represents a depiction of a faceless figure, cloaked, hooded and shrouded in a single sheet of cloth. I just love this sculpture. It's both ghoulish and peaceful at the same time.
