TLDR: Absolute Bikes and our guide, Andrew, were amazing to say the least. Biking, one heck of a workout, hot cocoa, burritos, hot springs, good Salida hospitality. 5 stars! The Good Stuff: I do a lot of research before I travel and three of us were planning a winter weekend getaway to Salida, Colorado. We wanted to try out fat bikes on snow, but called a couple places before our arrival and the shops said they either didn't have enough fat bike rentals for us or the conditions may not be great for us. I didn't find decent information on a guide. We arrive in Salida and stop in one bike shop, but they didn't have fat bikes or tours available. We stop in Absolute Bikes across the way (small town!) and they let us know we should email one of their guides, Andrew, who may be available tomorrow to take us out. Sweet! An email goes out and we wait to hear back. A few hours later, I get a phone call and email from Andrew. He's stoked to be available to host us on a tour at a time that works best for us the next day. He provides us with upfront details about the experience, what to expect, how to dress/prepare, etc. Extremely friendly and chill dude. He lets me know that he and some buddies need to take the necessary precautions and ensure the trail is safe and packed down enough to ride on. He calls and emails a few hours later and confirms we are good to go. He lets us know he can pick up some breakfast burritos (asks if we have any meat/veggie preferences) for us and throw in some Mt. Princeton Hot Springs passes for our private tour. We we're excited! I didn't even pay until the morning of, but knew Andrew was going to be there and ready for us. The tour was awesome! Andrew took us in his vehicle up to the start of the historic Narrow Gauge Cascade Rail Road Trail. He adjusted the bikes for us as we noshed on some of our burritos (SO GOOD BTW), tried riding around on the snow, and once comfortable, we were on our way. He chatted with us during the ride, told us about the views, peaks, history of the railway, talked about biking. He carried extra water for us and one of our jackets in case we got cold. The scenery was breathtaking! The ride up was tough for a Boston (sea level) based gal. We consider ourselves athletic and active, but fat biking was new to two of us and the biking was slightly uphill the whole way in high elevation. We took frequent stops to "enjoy the scenery" aka water breaks :). The terrain was a wide trail (4-6 feet for most of the way), but portions of the trail really only had a foot wide path you could ride on since the far left and far right sides were deep, soft snow! I wiped out twice and it was hilarious and fun. Once we got to the end of the trail, we biked down the road a short way to enjoy the Cascade Waterfall view. Andrew brought his camping/backpacking stove and made us hot cocoa. Yeah, it was awesome (since it was really windy and cold up there). We took the trail back down and cruised! I used the brakes a lot since we were flying. We finished off the experience saying goodbye to Andrew and soaking in the hot springs after. All in all, if you're down for a tough, but active and super approachable adventure, this is definitely for you! We only encountered a couple small groups of snowshoers and otherwise had the old railway trail and beautiful views to ourselves. Note: Be prepared with gloves, sweat-wicking clothes (I wore ski gear and left my ski jacket open), sun glasses, headband or thing hat for under your helmet, buff/scarf, and hiking-type shoes or boots (I wore bean boots). Thank you, Andrew from Absolute Bikes, for an unforgettable winter weekend activity in Salida! Best of luck with amping up the tour business!
