While back in my husband's home town for a high school reunion, my husband took me over to the old Becks Mill. The mill and grounds are beautiful. There is a $5 charge to enter but it's worth it. It was too hot to hike the trails, but we did walk around the grounds and up to the old cabin. We were told that Essie Beck wanted the Mill to be a park like setting. She use to cook Chicken dinners for visitors, so you could sit on the grounds, eat your chicken dinner and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We also were treated to seeing the mill at work, and I bought myself the last bag of the mill ground grits! If you have the time, drive out to the mill and see it for yourself. I bet it's even more beautiful in the Fall (and it would be a great time of year to hike the trails!)

For over 65 years Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery has enjoyed the recognition of being one of the most unique and renowned race tracks in America. The .555-Mile oval that features imposing 33-degree banked turns was built strictly for speed. Situated in the scenic hills of southern Indiana, The Salem Speedway roars to life with upwards of 12-15 "Special Events" per year.
This track is awesome! A high banked oval, similar to Bristol in size and shape, but drives like Darlington. The racing is awesome, especially when the ARCA Series is on track. The concession prices are reasonable, and the seating in the reserved section offers a great view with backs on the seats. I would highly recommend this track to any race fan!

The basement model railroad is patterned after the actual Monon line with a miniature model of the town as well. This makes it different than the usual made-up track layouts and worth a long time viewing. The hand-made buildings are in perspective proportionally smaller at distance. Get a tour of the caboose from the docent.

Looking for a place to do some back country hiking but can't get to the mountains, desert, etc.? The Knobstone (located in/around Salem, Indiana, not Salem, Oregon) may be your ticket. The Knobstone wanders through about 45 miles of state forestry land in southern Indiana with about 10,000' of up and 10,000' of down.
My son and I hiked it over Thanksgiving 2013. It took us just shy of 3 full days of hiking (I don't think we could have done it any faster and in summer I would have added a full day). Maps are available at most local outfitting shop or the Department of Natural Resources (www.ai.org/dnr). Also, I highly recommend this book, http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Knobstone-Trail-Indianas-Footpath/dp/0253222974. The trail has few water sources and this book provides descriptions of options for water drops.
I don't think of this trail as scenic so much as a workout, a very serious workout. Sure, Indiana is pretty flat and even if you find the biggest hill, it would be odd to have to climb more than 1,000 at a time. But, let's say you don't believe in switchbacks. And, you think that between over, under, around, or through, that over is always the way to go. Add a "knob(s)" to that mix, and you have 45+/- miles of serious hiking.

The Destination Antiques is such a charming shop. Couched between fields and housed in a renovated barn, it's charm is matched only by the warmth of the owners. It's arranged in a delightful way that allows exploring while simultaneously highlighting unique items. You could spend hours poking around the shop and would be sure to find something both fun and affordable. A must-do for the area.

This is a brand new winery we decided to visit, and we're glad we did. The service here was great and friendly, making us feel welcome. And the wines here were very good. We were especially fond of the Hunter's Ridge White and Winterer's White, two semi-sweet wines. If you come to the Sugarbush Maple Festival in late February-early March, Hunter's Ridge is nearby and is well worth a visit.

Uplands PEAK Sanctuary offers the opportunity to experience a connection with a pig, cow, or a chicken – as they are living out their lives with the love and care they deserve. Uplands PEAK Sanctuary is 20-acres of refuge with about 15 acres of woods. We welcomed our first residents, Andy and Annie, two brave little piglets in October 2013.
A unique experience for those that want to get away and do good at the same time. I'd much rather spend my money at this not for profit bed and breakfast, especially since it includes unique opportunity to interact with the residents.
