Gippsland Art Gallery

Reviewed By AVHan1

This newly revamped gallery is now among the best in the country. There is a constantly changing series of exhibitions, at least one of which is 'representational' or 'figurative' art. There is also a constantly changing exhibit of aspects of the permanent collection. Situated overlooking the Port of Sale there is also an excellent coffee shop serving cakes and sandwiches as well as a gallery shop. The gallery Director is one of Australia's foremost art writers so there is a comprehensive range of literature. 3D as well as 2D art is always on display and one gallery is totally devoted to the textile art of Annameike Mein.

Quite close to the centre of Sale, a good bike ride or a short drive, is this magnificent wetlands reserve. Leave enough time to do the complete circular walk down to the La Trobe Swing Bridge.

St Mary's Cathedral

St Mary's has been modernised without loosing the essential features of the lovely church. The stain glass windows were beautiful and the foyer/narthex roof was stunning. A beautiful mix of old and new.

La Trobe Swing Bridge

Reviewed By royv647 - Traralgon, Australia

It has been many years since I have driven on that road and did not know the bridge had been bypassed, as kids it was always a treat to go over the bridge to the beach towns nearby. Nice it has been bypassed and preserved. You can now drive into the park area beside the bridge, park the car and take your time walking about and reading all the history of this great engineering feat by the great Aussie engineer and architecture John Grainger. Built in 1883 it is still in great working order and signage tells us it is opened every Sat, at 3pm. Every Sunday at 4pm. And the 2nd. Wednesday of the month at 11am. It is the oldest operational swing bridge in Australia. There was a big restoration done over four years and opened in 2006 at a cost of nearly $1,000000. Really worth going to see this historic bridge that crosses the Latrobe River, just imagine the different types of traffic that have passed under it and over it over the generations, it is fantastic that we are lucky enough to be able to walk across it today and enjoy the experience. A must place to visit when in the area. A credit to all involved, I assume it is volunteers who do the opening, if so well done .

A very comprehensive collection of historical items to view. It is run by some very dedicated and knowledgable volunteers. It's an attraction that can be easily overlooked but it is worth finding when you do. Just head out to West Sale airfield and follow the signs.
