What to do and see in Saint-Tropez, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur: The Best Things to do Good for Big Groups

November 26, 2021 Diedre Savory

Brigitte Bardot frolicked on the beaches of St. Tropez in the '50s; now it's the playground of rap stars and international socialites. Most of the sandy hot spots lie southwest of town on the Baie de Pampelonne. But if you're not P. Diddy, take heart: you'll find a few family-friendly, public beaches where the sun, sand and waves are just as fabulous.

Citadelle de Saint-Tropez - Musee d'histoire maritime

For over 400 years, the Citadel rings the city. Element of the defence of the port the most important between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, it is now one of the few monuments of this magnitude of the Var coast. Proud of its rich maritime past, Saint-Tropez has decided to create a modern museum in the dungeon of the town's citadel, allowing all visitors to discover the daily lives of men and women who shaped over the centuries the Saint-Tropez of today.

Scenic old fortress turned into an interesting, unpretentious naval museum, with stunning 380° views. The location is superb, but the best part is getting into the museum. With information in both French and English, the mixed media exhibits are appealing for both young and old. Quite low cost by St Tropez standards, the 3euros entrance fee is a steal! The exhibits are tastefully displayed and cover the true identity of Saint Tropez in the past 500 years. Indeed, St Trop was not just a picture perfect fishing village, but it turns out it had much greater importance. The exhibits cover commerce and fishing trips along Provence’s coast, as well as long hazardous voyages aboard large merchant sailing boats beyond Cape Horn, journeys along the coasts of Africa and India, and the age of luxurious liners. Amongst notorious Tropezian celebrities, I discovered De Suffren, who had volunteered to help the colonists during the American Revolutionary War. Highly recommended !

Cap Taillat

Reviewed By B_Brierley - London, United Kingdom

We visited in August 2020 with our 8 year old twins and had a gorgeous day here. We tried to arrive early as others had suggested but only managed to make it around 10.30am. We ended up in a traffic queue that we discovered was for the main Escalet beach parking lot, so we ended up driving around this queue to bypass the first parking lot. It is better to drive up the residential street where halfway up the top there is another booth that sells tickets for street parking further up. We paid 4 Euros (cash only) and managed to find the last spot on the residential street by 11am. From here, we walked down the residential road to the end, where you turn left down a dirt track and walk about 30 minutes along a coastal trail. This whole walking trail is just stunning and there are many coves that you can choose to stop at - some that allow nude sunbathing just FYI :) We opted to keep going until the very end at stop at the last cove just before Cap Taillait beach. There is no shade here but we set up a makeshift shelter with drift wood and towels. We stayed for about 5 hours, swimming and having a picnic and just enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The water is unbelievably clear. We saw 1 jellyfish so beware. After we hiked back to our car, we drove up to Ramatuelle village for dinner. A perfect day!

We have come to L‘Escalet a couple of times as we enjoyed the sporting activities possible in the bay - kayaking and SUP. There is a small paid parking nearby which has enough space when you come early. And the local kiosk stand offers some simple, but nice food after swimming. Nice place to explore.

It's a bit of a drive through a winding road but the view on the back of saint-tropez with its beautiful beaches of Pampelonne makes it worth it.
