What to do and see in Rugen Island, Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: The Best Budget-friendly Things to do

July 29, 2021 Vergie Nakamoto

Welcome to Germany's largest island, with a myriad of terrains to delight outdoor explorers, from sandy coastlines to dramatic chalk cliffs. It's been a seaside resort since 1818 and is one of Germany's top vacation spots. There's something for everyone, from the two national parks to a former royal residence and a castle to the beach, of course - head to Binz if sunbathing is your primary objective.

Kreidefelsen

Well, if you like the chalk cliffs or not, everybody has to decide for himself. They are characteristic for Rügen, so take a look at them. There are different places where you can especially look at this natural spectacle. Of course the Victoria observation deck is a nice point (maybe the most beautiful one)? But along the Hochuferweg there are so many beautiful perspectives that you should not miss. If you go there by car, it's your own fault (parking, fees, still walking). You can not get lost... and public transportation goes there as well. We saved the entrance fee, because we were not interested in the Documentation Center, only movement in the open air, view, once from Sassnitz, once from Lomme. Important: Near Königsstuhl it will be full, just as near Sassnitz. In between there is a lot of peace and quiet. Recommended if you are good on foot, to walk back down to the sea (to Sassnitz). Here the rocky outcrops become really dramatic.

After bicycling from Binz, we made a stop in Selling. A special seaside resort with the wooden pier as the main jewel in the crown.

Adored this little steam train that runs between Binz and Goehren. Most of the carriages are traditional ones with a roofless viewing one in the middle, which was amazing on a sunny day. There is a restaurant car also. It felt like being on an actual toy train going through toy towns & villages and stretches of forest. Throughout there was the smell of the steam engine and train hooting. Going from Baabe to Goehring was a steal at £2.20 per person (single) There is a dedicated bicycle carriage too. I read somewhere that the train runs every 2 hours but we found it to be leaving hourly (not sure what the explanation is). You can buy the tickets at the station ticket office or on the train itself. Staff were very friendly.

We really enjoyed our visit to this hunting lodge. Parking is a bit complicated; you need to park in one of the official lots off site and then pay to ride the tram to the lodge. We enjoyed visiting the castle, but the climb to the top of the tower yielded magnificent views and was worth every step!. The grounds were lovely, they have a nice cafe and a great outdoor space to sit and relax.
