This is a great medium sized museum in the heart of Rostock. It has been recently renovated and seems like it is brand new. There are some great exhibits and it tells the story of the city. There is a new section with coins and art including the story of how Rostock lost its collection during the war and under the DDR. This area has english information available The Dutch art section is great and the lighting used to highlight the paintings is spectacular. In all museums I have visited i have never experienced the use of lighting to highlight a painting characteristics so well. It brings the art to life. Entrance is free and if you want to take pictures you can pay 3 euros. I was surprised how empty the museum was.

The great views that you get after climbing 175 steps to the top is the reward. The walk from the cruise terminal was a leisurely 15 min, 2 Euro entry fee is reasonable. There were lots of people on the beach watching a beach football match. It was good to spend the day in Rostock & Warnemunde on a hot day instead of taking the long non a/c train trip to Berlin. In any case, we've been to Berlin previously.

We travelled independently to Rostock from our cruise ship instead of taking the cruise line's excursion to Berlin. The Warnemunde train station is a 10 min walk from the cruise terminal and day tickets by S-Bahn cost 6 Euro each. The train takes 21 mins to Rostock Hauptbahnhof and you can either walk to the city centre or take the tram, which is covered by the day ticket, we opted to walk one way. Our primary reason to visit Rostock was to see the Astronomical Clock dating back to 1472, amazing piece of engineering with the original clockworks, precision workmanship that works today after more than 5 centuries. The clock is wound everyday! Being a Sunday, most of the city was closed. We however walked the lovely streets & had a light lunch as well.

What a lovely surprise! A very pretty and extremely popular street lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. It's a five minute walk from the cruise terminal and when you've seen all there is to see there the beautiful beach, the teepott and the lighthouse are close by. Alter Strom is bustling and there's a great atmosphere, it really is a very nice place to visit.
