South Higgins Lake State Park

We have been to many State Parks in Michigan, but this one may be the nicest one. The boat launch looks brand new and very nice. We will definitely bring our pontoon up next time! The park staff is very friendly and professional. Especially the park supervisor.

Resort course, part of the Gaylord Golf Mecca, which was designed by Tom Weiskopf.

Reviewed By Robert S - Key Largo, Florida

Well folks, we went to this place based of some rave reviews. Major disappointment.

The rooms were very, very basic, with ultra thin walls. You could hear people whispering in the hall way...no joke.

The golf course was mediocre at best, as was the food and service. I would never go back to this place and can't recommend it to others.

The end.

Happy trails!

Civilian Conservation Corps Museum

Reviewed By twoinmaine - Bangor, Maine

OK, we know most people may not be that interested in a partially restored Civilian Conservation Corps camp, but Mr. TwoInMaine's father was a CCC boy (they were all very young, and poor) before WWII. He was proud of building trails and parks and planting trees, but rarely said much about it. We learned more in our 45 minute visit than we did all the time while he was alive. That made it very worth the short stop. There are a few buildings restored or built by CCC "alumni" several years ago, a rebuilt barracks (CCC was run by the Army, and explains why Dad made sergeant so quickly: CCC boys went to the head of the line), artifacts and explanatory panels. This is a bit off the beaten track, but we think the small detour was worth it.

Campbell's Canoe Livery

Reviewed By ATravel0r - Troy Michigan

There are three canoe liveries in Rosommon. Campbell's. Hiawatha, and PaddleBrave. We rented from Campbells since it looked bigger than Hiawathas which is literally right across the street from Campbells. Both places only rent aluminum canoes. PaddleBrave rents ABS canoes which are much nicer when it is sunny and hot out, and they are quieter too. PaddleBrave picks up the river much further down the river than Campbell's and Hiawatha's, but they will drive you to the same drop off point as the others too. Campbell's has a 2 hour, 3 hour, and 5 hour route which you determine before you start because you drive your car to whichever pick up point you pay for, then they drive you back and you essentially paddle to your car. We took the 3 hour route which we did in a little over two hours. Note that the five hour route could only be started in the morning when we were there. Our boats were all clean, and they looked well maintained. The river is fun to paddle because there are a lot of turns and overhanging trees and such which make it interesting to paddle.

Michigan Fireman's Memorial

Reviewed By shrewdgrud - Adrian, Michigan

Went to this beautiful memorial site for the first time this year and found it to be a very humbling experience. It is a year round memorial about a mile away from Roscommon, Michigan, dedicated to the valiant fallen firefighters from all across the State of Michigan with their names, etched in marble slabs, a large statue of a fireman and various tribute markers, all on a beautifully maintained hillside with sidewalks, stairs and a parking lot. The annual "memorial service" that is held every year, coincides with the Fireman's Festival activities at the fairgrounds, which also has been an annual event for thirty six years. It is not just for firemen, it is for everybody. The Memorial site alone is an excellent and great tribute to all firefighters

Roscommon Zoo

Reviewed By lsines2015 - Clare, Michigan

We decided to drive to Roscommon to see this zoo for my daughters 20th birthday. We had a beautiful drive from Clare and had no trouble finding the zoo after our phones died. Had to pull out one of those paper maps that not many use these days. It was a cooler day so the only thing I wished for was a jacket. We saw all the animals, bot wild and domestic. My favorite is the white tiger. What an awesome creature. The spider monkey was quite comical as were the birds. I even got one of them to talk. The giant porcupine was extremely impressive as was the turtles. The horses, lama's, donkeys', and peacocks were all pleasant to look at as well. I wished that we hadn't had so much rain because the deer were quite muddy but that'd happen in the wild too so not a big deal. Affordable - 10 dollars a person and we paid extra to feed the animals which got us some good laughs.
