My kids and I were just here this past weekend. Every first Friday during the winter & spring, they have free admission, live music, food ( while it lasts), bouncy houses, and a lot more. We had a really good time, the kids did not want to leave. There is also free admission on Sundays. Its a great time to spend with the family or just enjoy yourself. It is a special gem in Rocky Mount.

This is a wonderful place to take your family to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of the lake. Whether you are relaxing in the gazebo, sitting amongst the ducks, or walking around, it's enjoyable and peaceful. Several people stop by to feed the ducks, take pictures, walk, or picnic. It's a nice place to dedicate 30 minutes to an hour for.

Tar River Trail

It's a great walk! The trail is 3.12 miles long. It goes along the Tar River just a short walk from Sunset Lake Park (River Road and Business 64). Along the way you will pass through Battle Park and ends at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. There is a nice color map you can download from the Rocky Mount city website by searching for the Tar River Trail.

Sunset Park

First I need to say to be sure to check to see if the rides are open. When we were there they had just closed for the season.

The park offers a basketball area, a tennis area, a picnic area, playgrounds, and a disk golf course that are open all year. After the 5th of September the rides (1952 mini train ride, 1920 Hershell-Spillman country fair style carousel, and a cute little ladybug ride) are closed for the season. The carousel was even dismantled. It's still a good place for a picnic or if you just want to stretch your legs after a long drive.

Best Friend's Dog Park

Reviewed By Richard T - Singapore, Singapore

It's a nicely kept fenced park for owners to bring their dogs there to interact with other dogs. Just an open space with tables for pet owners to use. With such an attractive name to the park, I was hoping for something more. Maybe there could be lots of interesting obstacles for dogs to engage in?
I was there alone, looked around, used a mobile toilet there and left. Nothing much here for me without my dog.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Rocky Mount,NC is a park designed recognize King. The City Council named the park after King because King delivered one of the earliest versions of his soon-to-be-famous “I Have a Dream” speech nearby on November 27, 1962. The park has a walking path, which leads you right to the monument and it has seats which viewers can sit and reflect. As i walked the path , I felt his presence.

Battle Park

Reviewed By cheryl h - Durham, North Carolina

The park is where the original village of Rocky Mount stood. It offers picnic areas, rough trails, paved trails for walking and biking, and scenic overlooks of the Tar River and the historic cotton mill. As you pull in the park the first thing you will see if the historic mill cemetery.

We found some of the non-paved trails very rocky and hard to walk on and it's not an easy climb down to the Tar River over the rocks. It started to rain before we could walk on the paved trail but we plan to go back the next time we are in the area.
