The story behind the Rankin House is gripping - how John Rankin and his family assisted over 2,000 slaves to escape via the Underground Railroad. The house sits atop a hill in Ripley Ohio overlooking the Ohio River. As with many small museums, our tour guide, Jeff, made history come alive with his knowledge and descriptions of the Rankin family and their role in helping escaped slaves. A memorable visit.

This man is an exceptional figure in the history of the Underground Railroad. He was separated from his family and sold into slavery at age 8. He worked to buy his freedom, then risked it all by helping others to escape slavery. The docent at this house had extraordinary knowledge of the man.
Excellent visit to the John Parker House. Dewey, the historian there, gave us a very thorough background story and history of who John Parker was and the important role he played in the Underground Railroad in history. We ran out of time but Dewey also wrote a book with 14-15 historic sites to visit while in the area. We plan to return to check some of these other places out. Highly recommend making the trip to visit this historic site.
