Unfortunately when we came here there was not enough snow for husky sledding but the great hospitality of the people more then made up for it. The kennel tour and the food was great. We also made a nice walk through the forest.

The collection of the Open-Air “Kizhi” Museum includes 83 monuments of wooden architecture: old chapels and houses, windmills and granaries, threshing barns and racks for drying crops…The gem of this collection is the 22 domed Church of the Transfiguration of Our Savior, 37 meters height. The Church of the Intercession of Holy Mary and the Bell-Tower located nearby emphasize the harmony and magnificence of the main Church. The guests of the museum can visit the Church of the Intercession of Holy Mary and peasant homesteads. Traditional crafts are demonstrated in peasant houses; wind flows bell-ringing over the island. Wonderful performance of the Museum folk ensemble supplements the impressions of the traditional peasant culture. The Kizhi Pogost Ensemble was enlisted into the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1990. I am a fan of open air museums, and Kizhi did not disappoint me. We stopped here as part of a Viking Cruise and it was breathtaking. A local guide took us through the two churches and we spent time walking around just enjoying the beauty and peaceful surroundings. I have never smelled such clean air in my life. There is a small restaurant and some very nice little shops at the docking area. All took credit cards. When you approach and leave the island, you get beautiful views. If you are going to arrive in the morning, wake up early to see it. We arrived very shortly after sunrise and the light in the churches was great. As you sail in, it will be on your starboard side so if that is the side your cabin is on just step out to see it.

This visit was during August 2018. Prior to my visit we decided to get a better feel for the reserve. There are options on their website to book a pre-arranged tour which takes you into the area of the actual reserve rather than to the beautiful waterfall. Tourists are forbidden in this area unless on this tour, and the beauty is absolutely incredible. During our walk through the reserve, we visited a raised swamp with a lake in the center with lots of beautiful things like white moss, sundew plants and then walked through a lovely pine forest, in which we found tracks from a hazel grouse and I also spotted an eagle owl. The path then went through a lovely, dark fir forest to arrive at springs with iron formations all over the depths. There were beautiful mushrooms everywhere. Well-worth a visit!
