Jewish Museum and Synagogue

Reviewed By 820lener - Copenhagen, Denmark

It is a very moving experience to visit this museum. It is housed in the oldest maintained synagogue and torah school in Schleswig-Holstein and therefore also serves as a historic monument and memorial place. It is unfortunately rare to visit a synagogues building in Germany that survived WW2. The permanent exhibition is about the history of the Jews in Schleswig-Holstein and the Jewish religion. At the time of writing this review there is a temporary exhibition about the Jews who survived WW2 and returned to Schleswig-Holstein, most of them until they could get away while a few stayed. The difficulties that they encountered in a society that highly ignored their sufferings and losses are displayed. This temporary exhibition is particularly thought-provoking and moving. A visit to this museum is highly recommended.
