In medieval Lorca the castle, and under the protection of the Alfonsina Tower, housed the Jewish quarter of the city. The excavations of this neighborhood have made it possible to know the Jewish houses of the time, with a rectangular floor plan, compartmentalized in rooms, and which can be used for living rooms, kitchens, warehouses and other rooms with different uses. Benches attached to the wall, tinajeros, cupboards, raised alcoves, etc. In lorquina Jewry the Hebrews established their synagogue, an exceptional example of Jewish religious art in Spain. The temple was built underground because according to the laws of the time it could not exceed the height of the churches and this, together with the fact that it was never converted into a Christian temple, has allowed the synagogue to remain in an exceptional state. The Archaeological Park of Lorca Castle has been conceived as a space to enjoy the finds excavated in the Jewish quarter through a walk through the streets of the archaeological remains of the Jewish quarter, discover how were their houses, their trades and traditions, And the feeling of Jewish spirituality with the visit to its exceptional synagogue.
Excavations located on the grounds of the Castle/Parador gives a glimpse into ancient times. You must pay for a g uided tour of this old Jewish quarter and tours are only scheduled three times a day. The guide was very good (Ruben) and even gave the explanations in English. The area is mostly ruins but they have added renovations to what was the synagogue.
