What to do and see in Redwood City, California (CA): The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

January 23, 2022 Kandra Bartel

Redwood City is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in Northern California's Bay Area, approximately 27 miles (43 km) south of San Francisco, and 24 miles (39 km) northwest of San Jose. Redwood City's history spans its earliest inhabitation by the Ohlone people to being a port for lumber and other goods. The county seat of San Mateo County, it is the home of several technology companies such as Box, Informatica, Oracle, Evernote, Wealthfront, and Electronic Arts. At the 2010 census, the city had a population of 76,815. The Port of Redwood City is the only deepwater port on San Francisco Bay south of San Francisco. Redwood City is the location of the San Mateo County Jail, for both women and men. The Malibu Grand Prix long time landmark was recently demolished along with the city's only Mini Golf, Go-Kart, Video Game Arcade, and Batting Cages. Malibu Grand Prix's previous location is currently the construction site of a new additional Jail and Inmate housing facility. The city has a motto "Climate Best By Government Test" which is a reference to it being one of the top German scouted scientific climates and the city was one of the locations mapped by them during their testing and data collection. The Hetch Hetchy water pipeline runs through Redwood City and supplies a vast majority of the surrounding area with low grain (+/− 3 grains) rated water.

San Mateo County History Museum

For me the highlight of the visit was the gallery featuring ships models, various wooden ships (and one old destroyer) from throughout history and around the world all done in magnificent detail and each about 2 feet long. This exhibition would stand out in any museum, even at a national level in Washington DC. Here it is really exceptional for a small county museum. Another highlight was the exhibit displaying and explaining via video the life of native American tribes in this area before the Europeans arrived. The tribe highlighted actually populated the entire south bay area. It was fascinating to see the details of their life. The gallery that attempted to praise the great entrepreneurs of San Mateo county unfortunately falls a little short because progress here is so rapid. The exhibit is already dated. The other galleries were also quite interesting and the building itself features beautiful details that are a delight to look at. I entered a skeptic and exited quite enthusiastic!

Came here to see our granddaughter in a Russian production through Theater Games. This theater has a great set up and very seat is a good one. Lobby is small but so is the theater. I would come for other productions too. User friendly, quite intimate.

We have gone to see several shows at the Fox. Million Dollar Quartet was fabulous. We have not been disappointed with any of the productions. The theater is small so seating is not an issue. You can see easily from all seats. This may not be broadway but some of the entertainers are definitely headed there. After the show you can dine at a variety of nearby restaurants. Nice way to finish the day.

Whether buying at the box office or online getting to your seat is always quick and easy. Popcorn and hot dogs are my favorites.
