Casa Leopardi in Recanati is the birthplace of one of the world's best loved writers and poets, Giacomo Leopardi. It has a rare library containing 20.000 volumes, which is visited every year by a large and varied public.
You must visit this house of the great poet,Leopardi You can only visit it with a guide. Our guide was excellent and since we were the only English speaking guests, we were alone with the guide and she answered all or questions with intensive knowledge. It was amazing to see the great poet's library with 25,000 books. His family still lives in the house. DON'T MISS IT!

The square on which sits the apartment where Leopardi lived. Beautiful space that retains a sense of the 19th century. You will go here if you are visiting his residence but it's worth seeing for itself. It's named after one of his poems.

Although this is a very important church, for the catholic religion, and a lot of people travel to pray to this black Madona, I found the place almost empty!! The church is impressively decorated.... because at its center, there's Virgin Mary house, brought from Nazaret!!!

Recanati is a charming town and a pinnacle of Italian history; birthplace of Giacomo Leopardi a poet and one of the greatest thinkers of the 19th century. Italians consider this a poetic town because of this. It is one of several towns of historical importance in the area and not far from Urbisaglia and Tolentino.

Mention crusades and a wealth of imagery floods my sensorium. Mention cults and my ears prick up, in this case it being the Cult Of the Virgin, which brought about the growth of this incredible city.
Legends abound, as do the Arthurian varieties, but here, the simple hut was dismentled stone by stone from Zazareth in the hills of the Marches and rebuilt in Loreto. A basilica popped around it and great artists like Antoniode sangallo the Younger, Bramante, Sansovino, Vanitelli and Francescodi Giorgio Martini, decorated it with a passion and vigour that rings strong as we stand admiring its glory.
Its true that Rome, Mecca and the Ganges are places of pilgrimage familiar to all, but there are innumerable locals around the world that attract millions of believers of every possible faith. I find it incredible to read that four million pilgrims do their thing each year to Loreto where traces of their passing can be seen in knee-marks in the stone that surrounds the shrine.
Name tagging has always been synonymous with leaving a personal inscription behind to celebrate your visit. Try these ones on for size: Columbus, Galileo, Colleoni, Descartes, Queen Christina of Sweden, Mozart, Murat, Standhal and yours truly, standing near the Casanova section. My femme shakes her head in sad disapproval. Hey, lads will be lads, even a 65 year old one.
What industry would you expect to thrive in a town of piety and reverence? Easy question. Making rosary beads, of-course. High in demand it once employed almost all the women of the village. The town's main street, Via dei Coronari, offers a huge selection, including beads made from silver. I was fascinated to see another production that is unique. That of manufacture of barrel organs, like a poor relation of the accordion characterised by brightly coloured casings and which are brought out at dances and village festivities. Musical instruments are a speciality that has fused the Marches as a creative haven in Italy.

This place is temporarily closed due to damages during the earthquake.
It helps if you have read the poem ("L'infinito") to give the place some context, but it makes a nice little walk and a place to ponder life for a while.

Definitely worth a visit to this all year round mechanical presepe. It is unbelievable what they have done. Various themes with moving figures and animals, the sound of running water, a baby crying. Scenes of the manger, countryside with people doing everyday chores. Entrance is free, you can just make an offer.

At present there are some limitations when you visit Recanati because the main streets are under construction. Public transportation from nearby cities are limited and you need to wait forever for a bus. Recommendation : rent a car and wait a couple of months to visit this beautiful Italian City with so much history and beautiful architecture. It seems locals know it .
