Worth the 5 Euro a head. Located near the fascinating named village of Snappertuna.
Stroll around, it is called a ruin so don't expect opulence. It does still have the main rooms, walls and internal shape for you to wassail around and think about the old days when this was connected to the sea.

Ekenas Archipelago National Park

Reviewed By Dave G - Helsinki, Finland

Ekenäs national park is a collection of Islands located off the coast of Ekenäs (Tammisaari). The majority of the population living there speak Swedish as their first tongue but the vast majority also speak Finnish and most speak English. It is accessible by boat only and is very popular in the summer months. There are boat services, such as the beautiful cruise boat Sunnan II operating out of towns such as Ekenäs in the area that can take people out to the park.
There are some Taxi boats in the area, such as :
'Myggen', 25 persons, information:
Robert Holmberg tel.int. +358 400 436 915.
'Johanna', 12 persons, information: Skåldö Fiskebod/Göran Wikström, tel.int. +358 19 201 350.
'Lea', 25 persons, information: Jussarö Port Kb/Jan-Peter Kivelä tel.int. +358 40 707 8900.
The tourist office in Ekenäs or the National park visitor centre, also in Ekenäs can help with information about boats. You can check out sites like visit Raseborg .com or National Parks .fi It is also possible, for example, to travel on your own boat or a friends boat or hire kayaks from a man called Jöns Aschan who lives in Ekenäs. This would be by prior agreement. The park has some very beautiful natural scenery and locations and facillities are provided at some locations. Access is of course subject to weather limitations and safety at sea. One should be sensible in planning a trip and wear correct clothing appropriate for the outdoor nature of the park. It is not suitable for people with mobillity problems. There is an excellent boat mooring location at Rödjan on the southern side of Älgö and a camping ground with some basic facillities, fresh water, toilets, cooking grills, a pay sauna, nature trail and viewing tower which is worth the climb. The sauna is operated by agreement with the resident who lives nearby, there is information posted on location. There is also a small fishing hut which is sometimes open and sometimes you can buy small things but no guarantee. This might also be popular with kayaking groups for example. There is also a good overnight boat mooring location on Jussarö with cafe, toilets, limited camping area, possibly a sauna / showers etc. This is also popular with kayaking groups. It is a national park, national park rules apply. Respect the nature, leave it as you found it and take your rubbish home with you. Don't spoil it for others.

We rented two tandem kayaks for just a few hours. Starting from Gullo, we took a narrow river-like passage between the Islands and did a short tour in the archipelago. Everything was simply amazing! The scenery in the area is truly outstanding and unique. Special thanks to Jöns, who was extremely kind and flexible and tried to make our experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. The kayaks are very stable, so even those with little experience should feel comfortable. After kayaking, we stopped for a drink at Ekenäs, a very cute Porvoo-like village. It was a perfect one-day trip from Helsinki.

This is a great walk. It can take an hour or more to follow the clearly marked trail. Pick up the brochure at the Information office or use the map on the back of the town map to help identify tree varieties along the way. Chances are you will not see much wildlife but lots of trees and some birds.

It was very interesting to hear about the history of this old building. There is also available plenty of information sheets about the possibilities to visit in the area. No entrance fee. Also inter-active spots (sounds and changing environment pictures), something for kids and DVD presentations on natural life in the archipelago. Different kind of souvenir items for sale but fortunately not quite the typical tourist kitsch.

Ekenas Museum

Really nice young man sold us the tickets and told the many possibilities of this museum area. For us the most interesting is the Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition and the films telling about her
life was a bonus we didn't know in advance. You can take photos in most areas, but not in this exhibition.
There is also part enlightening the history of Dragsvik from the Uusimaa regiment in 1600’s to being a Russian garrison’s prison camp for ”reds” after the civil war and a forced labour camp to finally being the post-war Uusimaa brigade. In the courtyard are historical interiors: The Merchant’s house, house of Blomberg and the Forngården house museum exhibit different styles and life in Raseborg from 1700’s to 1950’s.
With Finnish Museokortti free entrance, otherwise adults 8 EUR including the whole Ekta museum area. There is a small cafe also combined with the ticket sale and you can leave your bag in locked bag storage.

The Old Water Tower of Ekenas

Reviewed By Anna E - Helsinki, Finland

The Old Water Tower is a little bit of an unknown pearl to visit in Ekenäs. You can borrow the key from the Tourists' information by the Market Square, and then you can access the old brick tower freely. It's probably around 150 steps, and no elevator, so be prepared to walk up.
The view is fantastic, and you can see the whole town, the church and some of the archipelago. There's a safety cage all over the top, so you can bring children.

Forngarden Folk Museum

Reviewed By JariJK - Kouvola, Finland

This house museum (folk museum) is located in the village of Snappertuna, Raasepori, next to Raasepori Castle. There is a nice "Lovers' Path" (about 500 meters) between the castle and the house museum.
The house museum is an open-air museum established in 1958. The oldest part of this house was built in 1713. The museum consists of this main building, a loft, different kinds of sheds and storehouses, a barn, a smithy and an outdoor toilet. The museum shows how people lived at an archipelago farm in the middle of the 19th century (not 20th century as said in some brochures). The admission fee is 2 euros (in 2014), childrens free.
Our boys loved both the house museum, the path and the castle.
