Despite its otherworldliness, the carpark for this gem in only a 15 min drive from State Highway 1 and well worth the excursion. At the carpark you'll find an information booth and an honesty box asking for $5 pp. Pay up and march across the farmland to a long steep descent to the river. When you reach the river, you'll see a stand of woodland/ native bush a few hundred metres upstream. This is where the boulders are. There's a table at the edge of the woods and a full set of table and chairs in the heart of the glade if you're planning a picnic. It's a long hard trudge back up the hill (carry water) but what an amazing place!!!

Taihape’s great claim to fame is the Gumboot Throwing Contest held annually. I haven’t been but behind the public toilets are gumboot throwing lanes for practicing your skill. The statue is eye catching as you come into town from the North

Turakina Antiques & Collectibles is in a large building with many different rooms, each being packed with a vast and diverse range of antiques and collectibles. The stock is beautifully presented and the entire shop is very well laid out. You can move around easily without fear of breaking anything. The owner is a lovely person who seems genuinely interested in you the customer, and she clearly is passionate about her stock (which she personally sources she told us). This is a must-see shop if you love antiques and collectibles. I live about two hours drive from the shop and would drive there to browse or buy - it is a destination shop. There is a small but very welcoming cafe in the store with lots of delicious-looking food on offer. I liked the owner's generosity - I wanted to buy a set of a ship's decanter with six glasses. One glass had a micro chip in the rim and we were given a generous discount along with a suggestion on how to minimise the chip. I love this shop.
