January 18, 2022 Viva Honore

Rancho Palos Verdes (also known by the abbreviation RPV) is a city in Los Angeles County, California atop the Palos Verdes Hills and bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. An affluent suburb of Los Angeles, it is known for large tracts of open space and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Palos Verdes is translated as "Ranch of Green Sticks", probably referring to the willows in the northeastern part of Bixby Slough (now known as Machado Lake) shown on earlier maps.

Wayfarers Chapel

Wayfarers Chapel is nestled in a grove of towering redwood trees. Lloyd Wright designed the Chapel out of glass, wood, and stone elements that come together at 30 and 60 degree angles. It opened in 1951 to serve as a place for all wayfarers on life's journey to stop and give glory to God and is famous for its organic architecture. With its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island, the 3.5 acres that the Chapel sits on feature beautifully landscaped gardens with trees forming arbored walkways leading to gardens replicating the forest floor, expansive lawns, an outdoor amphitheater, and a rose garden with a walk of honor featuring engraved pavers. Wayfarers Chapel is a Swedenborgian church that welcomes people of all faiths to their worship services and to celebrate other important passages of life, including memorial services, baptisms, and weddings. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the National Memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg.

The Point Vicente Interpretive Center

We went to the free Point Vicente Interpretive Center. This is a very good smaller size musuem. There are exhbiis on the old Marineland. I had been there as a child so it was interesting to see. I also liked the historic exhibits on the Native Americans, animals, and on Portugeese Bend. There is a museum store. Outside the store, there is walking areas with good views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. There is parking and it is also free.

Point Vicente Lighthouse

We arrived at what we regarded as the perfect time to admire the fine construct and its gorgeous surrounding panoramic land and seascapes. Late afternoon as the evening light began fading. Walking from the Interpretive Centre towards the lighthouse was wonderful. Seeing the ever changing light on the rugged coastline creating varying patterns of hues was inspiring. It was fascinating to learn that its famous 5 foot Fresnel lens, which was hand ground in France, spent its first 40 years in an Alaskan lighthouse before ending up in Point Vincente in 1926.
