What to do and see in Rancho Mirage, California (CA): The Best Outdoor Activities

May 8, 2022 Veronika Gaddis

Located in the sunny Coachella Valley area of California, Rancho Mirage offers the perfect place to enjoy nearby Palm Springs, Palm Desert and Cathedral City, but it’s also a fabulous destination in its own right. With four courses in Rancho Mirage, not counting the surrounding areas, we guarantee you’ll find something you like. Like the late Bob Hope in days gone by, you’ll love teeing up among the palms! Rancho Las Palmas Country Club and Spa features three nine-hole courses designed by Ted Robinson. The Rancho Mirage Country Club has a PGA clubhouse, views of the San Jacinto Mountains as well as first-class driving ranges and practice facilities. Or put your clubs at the condo for the day and attend one of the many pro-golf tournaments in the area, including the ANA Inspiration. Rancho Mirage welcomes families in a big way! You and your children can explore the abundance of activities for all ages. Try the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert or Joshua Tree National Park. At the Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Gardens, get up close and personal with desert animals from North America and Africa of every shape and size. Book a tour or explore the grounds on your own time table. Ride a camel, see an eagle and pet a turtle.

Love hiking this trail. It is not difficult and is about 2 miles long. The views of the valley and the mountains are breathtaking. I walked it several times while staying at The Ritz across the street. Can be narrow in places, but never frightening. The trail is well traveled and well cared for. LOVE It!

While I knew this wasn’t one of the name courses around, the 30 minute lesson, 18 holes plus rental clubs for $125 was hard to pass up during my wife’s conference at the attached Omni resort. I was pleasantly surprised and had a great day of golf. The lesson by Assistant Pro Autumn Thomas was great. She knows what she is doing and after not playing for a while I was able to take her instruction to the course with great results. Other than 3 holes that were damaged by floods last year, the course was immaculate and the greens were true and fast. It is a “resort” course so it is tricked up a bit for the most part fun to play and not hard. Go have a fun low stressed day on the course and give Autumn a call for a tune up.

Typical Pete Dye course with elevated greens that are protected with deep swales and bunkers and several holes with water. You better know your game to avoid the water and bunkers. The course is well maintained and in beautiful condition. Only had one complaint. One older gentleman in the foursome ahead of us would not leave the green when done. He proceeded to fish balls out of the water and held us up several times. We heard the course marshall had spoken to him several times about slow play. Tempted to hit into him but that is not me.

I've played this course a few times in the past and enjoyed it. The course is now in the best condition I have ever seen it -- even the bunkers are well-maintained. Many interesting holes, with lots of variation. A gem.

We have been coming here for years and our last trip out was disappointing. However this trip has been amazing. The Pete Due golf course was on the dry side but still very playable. Chillin by the pool was great and Louis and the pool staff treated us like royalty! Thanks Louis! Just walking the grounds is so peaceful and even the food at Seasons was shockingly good. Can’t wait to come back soon!

The view from the dining room over the golf course was beautiful. Not only was the food beautifully presented and tasty but the attentive service was well received. The day we went we were even served free champagne! I was a guest of my friend and I would certainly recommend if you get the chance to go try this out. The price was very affordable too.
